I always thought that NASCAR ought to go back and use 1980's style low port heads to reduce power instead of using restrictor plates. I'd think it would be cheaper too.

Why don't they just run current production engines if all they need is 550 HP?

The Ford Mustang GT350 engine is making over 500 HP in NA form and will run 8000 RPM!

"Throttle body base plate must be no higher than the valve cover."

Solution: Foot-high valve covers :)

I don't disagree, that's some good outside-the-box thinking.

The power reduction is going to be from a .922” tapered spacer under the throttle body.
It’s not like there is going to be a 550hp dyno test.
Teams will do all the R&D they can to make the most power with a .922” spacer.
There are also a number of aerodynamic changes.
This is for the longer tracks, about half the races.
NASCAR is going there in an effort to make racing more interesting to watch.

80k-100k is peanuts compared to the development money spent on making that 550HP or whatever figure it is every time NASCAR makes a rule change.

With every rule change we hear For the interest of the fans and to provide close side by side racing. WTF close side by side racing might be a selling point to sponsors who are going to be quite upset if they find out that they are paying for a slow rolling turd. However in NASCAR's heyday often the races were dominated by a handful of cars. Tracks were adding seats as fast as they could in the days when 1 man had a lap and then some on the whole field. Every time NASCAR makes things "better for the fans" they leave. When is NASCAR going to listen to ticket sales? Fans wants the best driver and the team that that can make the fastest car to win. Are they try to dumb down the talent required to the point that the most marketable drivers get the rides? In that case the next generation of drivers will come from the pool of today's country music stars. Not much talent but damn the girls like them. And if they act up there's another one ready to go.

I think the goal of NASCAR should be to reduce the amount of rules to a minimum so as to increase the level of innovation and engineering per car. That will decrease the likelihood that all the cars will be bunched up together producing the most boring racing possible.

You think THAT is expensive????
Try living in Australia.
How does $57 for a cartridge of the 'Right stuff' silicon sound?
Or $32 for an Iridium spark plug?
Rip off capital of the world!

If I try & buy NGK Iridium plugs from Summit for $8, it proceeds ok to check out & then comes up with a message, NGK plugs only sold in the US. So I suppose that makes it legal theft....

It’s supposed to make the racing more interesting to watch. Fans liked the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star series racing so they are setting the cars up more like that.

https://jalopnik.com/nascar-will-reduce ... 1829492253
“NASCAR wants the cars in its top-level Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series to not string out like a broken bracelet from a Walmart claw machine, and encourage actual side-by-side/back-and-forth racing. NASCAR will try to do that, in part, by taking its Cup Series cars from about 800 horsepower down to 550.

NASCAR announced its new rules package for 2019 on Tuesday, which, depending on the race track, includes some big aerodynamic changes and restrictions on the engine. The changes are similar to what NASCAR did with its Cup Series All-Star race this year, which made the racing great to watch but didn’t get the best reviews from the people actually driving the cars.”

Reducing the power so that every track is a WOT conga line is not very interesting.

If you want to make it interesting, go with narrower, treaded tires, so that the drivers have to nagivate the course instead of just the traffic!
