Hi Carl
I was wondering if you could give me some advice

I have a Holden V8 (same as a small block Chev) and now have 650 HP natural with another 150 - 300 hp on the bottle. Good blocks over here are hard to come buy so I am going to get a spare and get it ready just in case.

Question is, is half inch head studs much of an advantage and whats the benifit from cast nodular iron 4 bolt splayed caps to billet 4 bolt splayed caps.

Trev going to 1/2 in head studs is going to distort the cylinders and the decks more as the threads are going to be closer to the edge of the cylinders. On the NASCAR Bucsh series blocks form GM are set up for 3/8 studs, I would stay with the 7/16 bolt holes as going to the 1/2 inch you may also see some cracking in the deck area look at the 400 blocks as there are a lot of problems with those decks cracking.

As far as nodular or billet caps the trend seems to be that the billet caps are used on the high horse power blocks made by Dart and GM ETC.

We use caps from Kenny at Program Engineering which they use a good billet material as there are some companys using cheaper material and in the end the nodular caps maybe stronger. On the R-blocks from Ford Racing seem to all have nodular as we have had some old Cup blocks go through our shop and some have Nodular caps and some have been changed to Billet caps.

With all the blocks we machine for other engine shops and engine builders all over the U.S. and Canada we use Billet caps only.
