Here is what I would do:
Go to ebay.
Search on Index Mill
There are a few results, but this one in NJ is Buy it Now for $1950
http://cgi.ebay.com/Index-747-VERTICAL- ... dZViewItem
If you are not familiar with Index, they are as good and in some ways better than Bridgeport mills but being less known the price is often lower.
One good thing about them is 6" quill travel (at least the ones I have used).

Are you saying that if you did the "Buy it now on Ebay" that he would try to charge you more even if you bring your own rigger? I have bought many machines on ebay and never had any problem.I appreciate the info...but this was the distributor that thought I should pay $1500 over the buy it now price..."just because" Already paid the rigger and all...the guys a crook.
For something like that I would just buy it now, then bring my own truck or a rigger with their own lift, In that case, what could they charge you for?
Ebay is really strict about stuff like that in my experience. If you file a complaint on an ongoing advertiser they do take action.

knee mills
Here's a few models to look for. All are good rugged american made machines,
Kearney Trecker model 315 (15-1500 rpm)
older OKK verticals (40-1600 rpm)
older Cincinnati mills like the #2 & #3 (16-1600 rpm)
If you can find a Cincinnati horizontal with the universal milling head then you've found a good mill as long as it hasn't been abused. Allows you to do low rpm vertical milling with 17" of "Z" table travel & mill horizontally when you'd like to.
I have many fond memories of working with these older conventional machines. Kerney and Cincinnati were all the rage back in the old days of aerospace machine work. Good machines.
