Beyond mach .55

What are the ideal situations that can let a port go beyond mach .55? Is there circumstances where flow separation can actually enhance the flow to a certain point?

Higher speeds seem to work on very high, straight ports,
like some of the modern 4 valve heads.

Interesting. Why? I'm guessing because flow seperation is less of a concern in a port with a straighter shot to the valve?
