SBC 350 TBI cam upgrade

Post by MNracer61 »

I have a 92 K2500 with tired 350, gonna freshen it and put in a new stick but want the computer to still function.

Looking for a good cam or kit to make this motor wake up and still be an everyday driver

Also would be open to Throttle body or injector upgrades as I have not come across much on google.

I tow with this and it is my everyday to and from work truck.

Thanks for your input.

94-95 lt1 camaro cam
Zz4 crate engine cam
Or like a xr252hr.
I mention those assuming you have a block with bosses for a hyd roller.
If you don't go on the lines of this:

Find some vortec heads and a 4 barrel dual plane intake. Put a tbi adapter on it. For better fuel mileage find a iron 4 barrel intake and use a adapter with this. The iron intake will not work with vortecs though. Put some longtube headers on it 1 5/8 3 in collector. Try dual 2.5 exhaust. Don't cheap out here because the exhaust is super important. Dont go over 218 at .050 on cam. This is with towing in mind.
Ed wright at fast chips can make a chip to help it Out. Keep that in mind.

i have a 95 GMC ,, i found a hyd roller cam out of a 305 marine engine ,, like 195/205 on a 109 ,,, its a 5.7 in the truck ,, I think this will do well ,, the factory cam is like 165 / 175 @ .050 FT HYD ,, I'm gonna put it in 4 advanced , bump about 5-8 degrees more initial and see how it does

Most fasties wont like this answer, but a 204/214 cam still pulls like 19" of vacuum on a SBC.... Also, freshen 305 heads..

No matter what cam you put in, you should get a custom tune regardless. You will never see full potential or be happy of the engine just running on a stock tune. That is 90% of the reason TBI's get a bad rep, people don't get them properly tuned and the wont make the power they should. I ran a 406 in my 91 GMC with a tiny little Comp HE252H (206,206@.050) flat tappet that would run 13.60's shifting at 5000 with a good tune. The truck sounded like a completely stock 350. Upgrading cams it will now run 12.90's, and I still haven't gone roller.

I would put the proper cam in for your application and go from there. That is still my problem, I should've got a nice little custom ground hyd roller.

IMO, I would put a wideband O2 A/F meter in after you do your upgrades. I got a 91 K3500 5.7 in a couple of mouths ago for head gaskets leaking, it was just rebuilt, and only has 5,000 miles on it. When I pull the heads we sent them out to be checked and VJ touched, the exhast valves had to be beaten out of the head. After doing some R&D the motor was freshen up with .040 overs and a rv/towing cam. That was enoght to make the engine go lean when it was under load. I installed adj. fuel reg. and reflashed the eprom and the A/F meter to solve the issuse.
