900cc geo metro 56mpg 1700lb car(55hp)? 454 t56 4000 lb lowered truck 18-20mpg only because I drive chill 70mph at 1700 rpm(480 hp, 530 tourque)?.Or a 305 in a Buick Roadmaster station wagon getting just shy of 30mpg(200hp maybe on a cool night)? YOu tell me whats more efficient? The amount of fuel I use or how much of that fuel is being transfered to either HP or working torque?. Those kinds of displacement should be getting 90mpg if they are so efficient. Efficiency can be viewed by intended purpose too... is 500cu in (8,226 cc) less efficient for pulling a skid with a truck or a 1.2l at 6200 rpm?

And cost? I Am doing a 496 with a used crank, new rods and ported 781s for around 2300 bucks... down the road if I wanted to throw heads on my own time 700hp is possible if I desired. HOw do you think Vortecpro builds his engines cost effectively to make a profit? Magic?
No mate ! you've got the wrong end of the stick ! efficiency comes in many forms, lets look at gas flow for example, or RPM 's it's a lot easier for me to get more hp / cu " out of a 100 " eng than your 500 " .... I'm not saying it can't be done

Dart pro 1's 275 oval port worked over alittle the exhaust is almost flawless out of the box.I have been driving the car around and one thing I noticed is that it didn't clean up off the cam until 2800'ish with 3:73's.I can see putting in 4:11 gears in pretty quick. On the freeway its great on the side streets not so great banging and popping.i guess drive around in secong on side streets

From page 1
and you'll need a cam around 260@.050" on the intake.

yeah Mike Jones you nailed it on the cam specs I know some builders could do it with less but for the average Joe this combo works well

I had Mike grind a flat tappet cam for a 380 2bbl dirt track motor. He said it should make 450 hp. On the second pull it made 448. I don't know how he was so far off. Oh well, nobody's perfect. 8)

That's a lot of cam for that compression! did it pull those numbers on 87 octane?

non oxy 92 and 38 degrees timing. didnt try 87 since i already had 92. i would like to have seen what it would have done with a tuned carb, as i didnt want to dick with the 1250. was reeeeaal fat from 4500-5500 then perfect from 5500 to 6300. then fat fat fatty after. just wanted to prove to a few friends that you can poop 600hp with the wrong parts and under 500 inches.

Bob, keep in mind a Super Stock peanut port 470, flattop piston, 236 peanut port heads, solid roller, Q-jet, 720 HP, under 9.1 compression.
Racing a NA NHRA stocker should be mandatory before any posting.

Imho its all in the details, if you have the correct combination of parts and use your head get good machine work and get all the clearances right I feel the number your after will be there
Too many magazine articles make it seam like you just bolt together parts and wala your a hero but it doesn't work like that
too many people are after numbers including my self when we should take a step back and think about what the engines going to be used for and how much maintenance the customer is willing to deal with.jmho
