Yes, it works fine but the author points out that the extra expense could be used to justify purchasing a forged or otherwise superior crank.

I'd say as long as the holes are drilled axially they should be OK. There was a time when installing mallory in the existing factory radial holes, capped with weld was common. Even with nickel rod I think welding cast iron, even nodular or ductile iron, is too big a risk.

-Here's a couple of pictures of a wrong way to install heavy metal---holes drilled too close to each other and too close to the outer edge of the counterweight.

-no strength left in the crank metal to contain the metal against the G-force of high rpm----2 pieces of metal broke away at about 6500 rpm.

-this was a major disaster of a 600 ci BBF because of this bad heavy metal installation.

That had to have been a mess at 6500.

Looks like the drillings intersected a radial hole as well as another axial hole.

We had a customer years ago that had a crank with heavy metal installed radially. He said it blew the metal at RPM. He said that he started to notice a vibration but the engine shut off pretty quick. Turns out it severed the braided steel fuel line to the fuel pump!!

This is the same guy why threw a rod and came in because he lost power and heard a loud bang. Everybody in the pits was yelling and waving their arms to get him to shut it down as he idled along to his pit. Giant hole in the pan and running on 7. When you race circle track for 40 years you have all sorts of different experiences.
