Clear top for intake manifold?

Post by SMITHBERGRACING »

I'm working on a project where I need to find some material to withstand wave pulses in a manifold, be machineable, be resistant to gas, and handle engine operating temps. What material to use or past experiences with? If you could imagine a tunnel ram with a flat top I need to make the top clear to view in. Would acrylic get the job done?

Yunick used Lexan to look into water jackets and oil pans… should work for you.

We have used lexan for intake manifolds on single cylinder engines before. Holds up to gasoline well. But requires a chemical vapor blast to really make clear after machinings, sanding, etc.

Yes, Lexan™ is GE's brand name for polycarbonate. When Smokey was looking at flow patterns in oil pans, he found it essential to put a light source inside.

A 1" thick Lexan plate top for tunnel ram should work well for this project.
