I'd just use a set of valve cover studs to place the cork gaskets on, stack two if you think it would help, but I think a single thick cork gasket would work. Then use a set of valve cover hold down tabs on top of the covers and I think you would be good to go. No need for sealant.

Same deal on my AFR heads with stock covers, ended up with the 1604 Felpro gasket. Lot easier than gluing 2 together.

I'll keep the fellpro in mind. I have been grind the tabs away. Also found out that my bolts just about bottomed out in the top holes. Corrected that too. Will see if that solves the issue.

I've always liked studs myself and they hold the gasket in place with the cover off. Buy some threaded rod make your own w/e length you need and nylock nuts or T handles.

A stud with wingnuts doesn't work in combination with my manifold and stacks.

Well, first test drive seemed to be positive with the tabs gone and the inner bolts a little shorter. Going to take a good at it some more before I say vitory.

I have always used cork gaskets, short bolts or studs and good old INDIANHEAD sealer for the go!
What few engines I have put together are ALL sealed with INDIANHEAD!! Everywhere and no problem anywhere through the years!! Old tech, but the messy crap flat works!!
Head bolts and even (2) .020" shim head gaskets stacked at over 11 to 1 CR!!
