BBC Rods

Post by MarkR »

I need a set of BBC Rods. I am wanting to turn the engine to 7000 or so, give or take a couple hundred rpms. The pistons with pins are 793-794grams. It will be a 10:-10:5:1 motor. Stock Crank, iron heads the rotating ass. will be balanced.

What would be a suitable rod?

thanks

a thumb rod, from a truck big block. Many will say just go China because they are better and cheaper but I have had several bbc's using these truck rods, resized of course with aftermarket rod bolts and very very good service.

I've used them in 7000 rpm engines as well with no problems. Of course, magnaflux, resize and good bolts are mandatory, as stokerboats says as well. I have a few sets here if you're looking for some.

We call them "U" and "Y" rods. Thumb is good too!

I would only use them up to 7000 ish in a 4" stroke or less though. If you're going with a 4.25” stroke, keep it under 6500. The rod ratio is a little low in those applications IMO.

As far as an affordable imported rod, I think the Molnar is the way to go. They design/quality is probably the best of all the imported rods.

I have used Chevy BB truck rods in my drag motors. Resized, ARP goo rod bolts, magged, and shot peened, and polished. Great rod, durable and never had one fail.

can he rebuild thumb rods and install new bolts/ bushings himself?
how many of you have to detail SCAT and Eagle rods out of the box
look at the total cost/ benefit tradeoff

so mark
price rebuilding thumb rods with new bolts
vs
Scat rods (or other) ( which are tempting given the price of rebuilding+ bolts these days)
what IDK is if the aftermarket rods can be used out of the box or will they require a tune up
I always check all rods but can do it myself
this broad should be able to tell you
if they do require detailing, touch up the big ends, check the pin fit in the small end, etc the price that too
pressed pins or lock rings?

I can do a decent measurement and good visual check ---just can't alter anything i find or what is an acceptable tolerance. Thats the risk i guess u take wtih the internet--eveyone has an opinion but i do trust this board and its members for the most part. they are press fit piston.

As for the scat rod---I assume you can run them--- as they are being sold as a ready to run product. I haven't seen a set out of the box ever, so really don't know the qc. This is not a radical motor and I want to spend my money wisely when I do. Anyhow I am weighing my options. thanks

I've ran many sets of eagle, Scat, ohio, and other chinese rods I have always had to have the big ends resized and the small ends pin fit so to be safe add that to the cost of the rods
for what you are doing the Thumb rods rebuilt with ARP bolts would be the budget ticket, if you get scat rods get the pro comp I beams they are light, strong and a good price
