If you ever need a STRONG magnet
I just took apart a car electric fan..And WOW it has a magnet that has a 25# pull.Put that in your pan.Oldhead
Quicker then most
Re: If you ever need a STRONG magnet
I think this is a good idea. These magnets are so strong they would not need anchoring to a steel oil pan.oldhead wrote:I just took apart a car electric fan..And WOW it has a magnet that has a 25# pull.Put that in your pan.Oldhead

Re: If you ever need a STRONG magnet
Funny thing was, just a cuppala days ago, my daughter and I were travelling behind a large truck out on the highway. I was happy to troll along at his speed of about 95kph. Then thinking about saving petrol, I said " what we need is a bloody great magnet at the front of the car, and we can just get dragged along for free " lol
Re: If you ever need a STRONG magnet
Thing is, rare earth magnets are sensitive to temperature.
Yes, a fan motor operates in a hot environment, BUT, they are also air cooled by the flow.
So maybe don't trust them to stay put in an oil pan by themselves.

Re: If you ever need a STRONG magnet
Well, if they lost magnetism from temperature cycling up to about 250F, they would not be very useful for catching particles anyway. So, this idea depends on what is the critical temp for longevity of the magnet. I have a hunch fan motor magnets would be ok.clshore wrote:Thing is, rare earth magnets are sensitive to temperature.

That's what I use.Rizzle wrote:hard drive magnets - rare earth.

The hard drive magnet(rare earth) has been on my steel oil pan for 3 years. Still as strong as the first day I put it on.
Re: If you ever need a STRONG magnet
Lowest temp where earth magnets stop working is in the >300*C range (wiki), so i think they are ok inside an oil pan that doesn't go much above 100*Cclshore wrote:Thing is, rare earth magnets are sensitive to temperature.

Re: If you ever need a STRONG magnet
If you read the article Kevin linked to, it depends on the thickness to diameter ratio, not just the Curie temperature, and for very thin wide magnets they can start to lose field well below 100C. The good news is that there is an easy test - put it in an oven at 250 F for awhile and then take it out and see how strong it is while it is still hot.Rizzle wrote:Lowest temp where earth magnets stop working is in the >300*C range (wiki), so i think they are ok inside an oil pan that doesn't go much above 100*C

Once it loses the field, it will not regain the field when it cools. For hi-temp stability, look into Samarium Cobalt. Talk to the people at a magnet company, like Crucible, in Ky. http://www.salespider.com/b-188026566/c ... -magnetics
Is the defect in what I see, or what I'm seeing with ?

I like the filtermags, got one on my daily truck, even if it just keeps the filter cleaner longer. Read something once that an engineer said, think it basically was that any iron block will have ferrous material floating around in it.
I've herd microwave magnets are pretty good, got one that I need to replace. If I remember, I'll take the magnet out and stick it in my parts washer.
Actually bought some magnets to make a short video but it's down on the list LOL

clip some onto your fuel lines; like a baby NMR aka MRI, it helps align HC's polarity and is said to improve efficiency.
