Comp Cams ultra gold rocker arms

Post by resurrectionjoe »

Customer wants me to use a set of CC ultra gold rockers on his engine so I order a set in. (19021-16)

This is the 1st set of them I've seen (nothing against comp just normally use other brands)

Looking them over they seem fine but I notice the pushrod cup looks big.

A little measuring and test fitting later and sure enough the cups are machined for a 3/8ths ball not 5/16th.

After a conversation with comp tech he said they must be a defective set since all their rockers are set up with 5/16 cups.

He even puts me on hold for a few minutes and goes to the warehouse to check a set and comes back and tells me they are definitely 5/16th cups.

Order another set in and get the same exact thing.

Another conversation with comp tech and he now replies "that's how we make them now and you can use either a 5/16 or 3/8th ball pushrod".

Now I don't claim to be Einstein but this doesn't sit well with me.

IMO a 5/16th pushrod tip would be bouncing around wildly in the 3/8th cup at lash since it only has contact at the tip and no immediate support on the sides.

Also I feel since the contact patch would we severely reduced so there could be wear issues in the future.

So my questions are :

Have any of you seen this before?

Am I getting BS'd by the comp tech?

Do any of you use them like that and have no issues?

How long have they been doing this?

I've seen other older comp rockers before and I don't recall them being machined like that.

Are other companies doing this also?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

the 5/16 pushrod would have a much greater point of contact in a 3/8 cup and the other way should not fit
try a 3/8 pushrod and ball
if it works smoothly switch pushrods
what are your lifter cups?

I used some of the ultra gold before the new arc design and they were the nosiest rockers I've ever herd. I replaced them with some ultra pro mags and liked them, then I bought a couple other sets of ultra pro mags and have had issues with both them. I've had issues with over half my comp cams parts and just will avoid them from now on, it's like they need to drop the CAMS and add a PRO!

Can you give some detail on the problems you had with the ultra pro magnums ? I was planning on using a set for a SBC soon, just wondering what to look for ?

It is a little disconcerting when you take your brand new set of Ultra Pro Magnum rockers out of the box and two of them are missing the tru-arc clips as just happened to me about five minutes ago.

Lifter cups are 5/16th.

I would like to use readily available pushrods.

BOOT,

What size were the pushrod cups on the ultra golds you used?

DaveMcLain,

What size are the pushrod cups on on the ultra pro's?

The gold cups are roughly 3/8 and are also on the ultra pro mags I have, the golds look larger but when you use a caliper the diff is minimal. 5/16 pushrod was use on both and feels fine, doesn't have as much movement in the ultra pros but the cup is deeper in the body.
