Re: 3 sets of heads , 1 engine combo ....406 sbc
I'd run the 11x - small cam, big heads works just fine & when you look at it the 11x's aren't really a big head on a 400 cube engine anyway.
I've made 507hp @ 5700rpm from 355 cubes with a baby 234/238 hyd roller - bigish heads for the capacity, lacks nothing down low, pulls like a train with a manual trans from 2500rpm through to 6200rpm.

Just get the lift up there, that 355 (was a holden, not a chev) had .627" lift with 1.65 rockers & a rare injection intake that pretty much functioned as an IR setup - bellmouths with straight runners in a big plenum.
Dunno what rockers will take you to .600" with the cam you have - but maybe step up the ratio on the intake & get it up to .650"or so.

i can run a 1.7 on the intake side for .640 lift ..... , i am just not certain it will help a whole lot ? hell , i have numerous solid rollers , with durations from 250 up to 268 @ .050 , and lifts from .630 to .720 .....but this will be a cruiser this time around .KnightEngines wrote:Just get the lift up there, that 355 (was a holden, not a chev) had .627" lift with 1.65 rockers.

so do you guys feel a 6.90 is out of the question ?

Maybe doable - but methinks you'd need shorter gears, may mess up the 'street cruiser' thing a bit.
I'd just build it - it runs what it runs, it'll be no slouch - so what if it only runs 7.2-7.3, that's still plenty quick enough for a bunch of fun on the street!

absolutely ! there is also a reason i chose a 110lsa over the 108 ......it will have plate kit on top just in case one of my buddies talks smack .lolKnightEngines wrote:Maybe doable - but methinks you'd need shorter gears, may mess up the 'street cruiser' thing a bit.

I'd run what you got with the better heads. you have it why not run it?
Re: 3 sets of heads , 1 engine combo ....406 sbc
I'd go with Big Joe/ rfoll/ brazillian/ amcfan/ knight engines\
gaskets to get the quench tight
compression for available gas
unsroud the chambers if too much compression

If you decide to cam up later, the larger heads will be a better choice. Run the spec heads, save the 11x for a future serious build, save the fast burn to get the compression up on a 350 for a daily driver or whatever.
So much to do, so little time...
Re: 3 sets of heads , 1 engine combo ....406 sbc
I have to disagree, I've been high 10.60s @ 3290 (406) with 3.73s power steering turning the fan with a production block, performer RPM heads, the dreaded dual plane intake, 750 Holley, 240 @ .050 solid flattappet .520 lift, cast crank, 5.7 GM rods, in full street trim, @ Bakersfield, that was 10 years ago the thing still runs today. Keep in mind this is under 500 HP, the point is any of those heads prepped correctly will work, but the 11xs would be my choice.governor wrote:Do you have to use an OEM block? If not it's a huge mistake, I have seen many put $800-$1200 of machine work and main caps on these blocks
only to have them break. I myself have broken to blocks in the main web area and was only in the high 500 hp range.
The best investment is a solid foundation and money will be well spent to at least buy an SHP block and an after market forged crank and
use the Scat Pro Comp 7/16" bolt rod, this is a very good rod for the money and you will have less clearance issues vs the regular Scat rod.

well , i have tossed this around with my buddies , and like some have said ...i can use the 11x heads , and if i need more power i will toss in a solid roller ...i am gonna sell the fastburns and use that money for other needed parts ......the spec heads are very nice so they will stay on the shelf !

Your under 500HP was the key, Like I said mine were in the high 500hp range.

Why do you associate compression loss with overlap from a bigger camshaft when the two are over 180° apart and do not effect each other?
Re: 3 sets of heads , 1 engine combo ....406 sbc
I see your point. We did have a 65 Chevelle, 400 production block, cast 3.750 stroke GM crank, 5.7 Scat rods, flattop Wiesco pistons, Brodix-10s, 264 @ .050 roller. Car ran @ 3070, 9.70s on the trans brake, this ran about 7 years, engine is still together sitting in the shop, but I will say we were awfully afraid of that crank breaking off the trans brake, turned 7800 RPM in the lights, probably some luck here, but at the same time we didn't just use any parts (blocks-cranks) that we came across, they were carefully selected. Engine dynoed @ 608 HP. Showed 590 HP going down the track.governor wrote:vortecpro wrote:I have to disagree, I've been high 10.60s @ 3290 (406) with 3.73s power steering turning the fan with a production block, performer RPM heads, the dreaded dual plane intake, 750 Holley, 240 @ .050 solid flattappet .520 lift, cast crank, 5.7 GM rods, in full street trim, @ Bakersfield, that was 10 years ago the thing still runs today.
