There are good cams out there for speed density.. Or you can have one custom ground.. Usually 210-220 @.050
And ground on 114,115, or 116 lobe seperation.. Check with comp cams..

I have a crane 2020 in my 351w f150 with ported gt40's.. Runs so much better than stock, but I'm mass air and can get by with 112lsa..

Budget limited build but how much did it cost to make it mass air and what is involved? Thanks! I am 95% sure I am better off building it with a mild cam 210@ .050 intake and a 114 degree lobe center and keeping it speed density.

It was a junkyard DIY setup.. I got a harness and computer and all the needed parts from a 96 so it would be obd2 and easy to get a flash tuner for it..

If I were you I'd just port the exhaust side of the heads, a good valve job, a cam with abt .530 lift, 214/218 @ .050, 114lsa and install at 110icl, and headers and good exhaust.. The intake side of those heads is good and your intake manifold is good..

Progress: Slow and painfull lightning engine removal. Not really sure why this truck was dipped it the Long Island Sound but judging from rust and corrosion it was! The block had a drivers side freeze plug fall out and engine would not hold water. Interested in what would make the plug fall out? Water freezing in the block? I have seen many blocks cracked from water freezing but never a plug pop. The block so corroded that there is not enough iron to hold the plug? In any case I will need to magnaflux this block real well before I spend a penny machining it.

This worries me! A freeze out plug on both sides of the block came out. What could have caused this?

Super clean under the valve covers for a 220,000 mile engine.

Bored has no ridge and no scatches from being overheated. Can still see the hone marks. Is it even possible that this has 220,000 miles on it? Quick caliper measurement looks like standard bore.

That would be no scratches in the bore. I need to figure how to edit after I post. Chamber color is dark but consistant. Either burning rich or burning oil or a combination of the two. Sorry for the poor photography. It was getting late and battery in phone was too dead to flash.

This is interesting thread. From my experience fuel injected engines often look very good when inspected (at tear down) if they have been well taken care of. Like this one seems to have been. I will be looking forward to see pictures of the bearings and crankshaft journal's. If this engine is a flat tappet one it will also be interesting to see the wear on the cam & lifters after all those miles !

Thanks! Will continue teardown today. I believe that the fuel injection unlike the carbed engines I grew up with don't wash the cylinders down at cold start. Keeping the bores in good shape and keeping the oil from becoming diluted. I am sure the old saying that an engine needs a rebuild at 100k is long gone with a well maintained f.i. engine.

Hurricane Sandy? Some of those "water cars" have shown up on car lots here in Texas. Why do you think Welch/core plugs get called freeze plugs?
IME they rarely do pop from ice but as a 15yr old kid I found one on the garage floor under my old y-block after I waited too long to drain the water one winter.
Put it back in and used that engine for another 6mo. or so without any ill effects I could see. Myself, I'd hunt for another donor. JMO.

Yeah, I am questioning this block too. I do have the 351 from the bronco but have not yanked it yet. The owner of the truck lived way out east and was a fisherman I hear. So if the truck didn't get dipped in Sandy it spent it's life parked near a dock.

Pretty clean chambers, small amount of fuel wash, just a bit od deshrouding and maybe a bit of polishing and they are done.

Pistons came out in very good shape with few scratches.
Rod bearings show signs of detonation ( probably due to oil dilution )
