looking for cam advise for 406

Post by mdabbott2009 »

What we have is a 406 going together for a 80s pick up 410 gear with 285 tire I believe 55mph is right at 2800ish rpm. We are looking at getting freakshow 3000-3200 stall who drives 55 anyways.

Motor as of now is 406 with auto tech pistons (9.5-1) eagle 5.7 h beam rods crower crank we picked up for next to nothing. Looking at profiler 195 heads with 205-208 ? Vavle haven't decided that yet. Air gap intake. Crane 7/16 1.6 rockers crane pro hydraluic lifters.

The cam I was going to use before we bought the bottom end was a isky regrind 225/230 525/525(1.5) kinda thought this would be little small to really use in the motor thought why not just make some more power

I was woundering if a cam like 242/250 on 108 580ish lift would be to much cam?

Or if you guys have any other ideas for camshaft speak up please and thank you

In a truck, I think you're a little bit aggressive on duration. Personally, I'd be looking in the 230 (ish) range on a 106 LSA. The torque will be incredible.

We will use a air gap of some sort maybe vic jr if we have to
Th400 3000stall 4wd mud truck gets raced few times a year drives maybe 50-75 miles a week that's pushing it
Really need it to pull threw 6500rpm if possible
750 aed or quick fuel Mallory hei 15/8 headers for now w ith 2 1/2 pipe with some small loud turd muffler
Goals are to keep up with some mild big blocks
And lay some nasty rubber down he don't care if its got a nasty idle said makes it sound like he actually spent money on a motor

First you need to decide what is more important, Mud Racing or Street Driving?....Both specs will be very different.
The best of both worlds makes a truck that sucks to drive and gets beat at every mud event.

Just for reference there is a guy here that builds 10.5 383's with AFR 195 heads an aggressive Comp cam 248 int 252 ex on a 108 (400+cubes would be on a 106) with 1.6 rockers (Hyd Roller) Lift is .650 ish with a ported Air Gap that makes around 580 horse on pump gas..It's not very street able and definitely will not pull enough vac for power brakes.

He trys to explain how unstreetable this is and they still come back bitching once they have it in the car.

750 carb is too small. look for a 3310-1 or a 4780, 780 and 800 cfm respectively. My 400+ engines slow down a bunch with a 750.
So much to do, so little time...

I have the same thing.. a k30 part time racer.. IMO it's gonna be the converter choice that decides if it's street or race... And that's gonna dictate the cam you can use... Mine is more street. I have a coan 11" stalls 3200 with a 406. It's as loose as I would go for much street driving with 4.10's and 315's.. (38.5 race). It's decent on the street but I am gonna put 4.88's or 5.13's when I can... that would allow a looser converter to be streetable. My cam is 245@ .050. A 4000 stall would be better..

A 3310-2 is a vacuum secondary 750 cfm carb.

The older 3310-1 was 780 cfm and made like a 4150 instead of the 3310-2, 4160 style.

The 780 has a rear jet plate is all if not mistaken. I also think the 780 had dog-leg boosters too..

Thinking more 236/242 108
I'd go bigger on carb but for some reason he don't want it

With your compression ratio and cylinder head runner volume, I'd go with this cam and really reconsider the desire to pull to 6,500 rpm with a 3k converter. If you must have that peak rpm and you really want that converter, you'll be looking closer to 10.5:1 compression, 215 (ish) cc runners and cam in the mid 240s and most-likely have to ditch the RPM Air-Gap.

If the carb doesn't have down leg boosters it is likely a 750 not the 780. The 800 cfm 4780 is a nearly identical carb with mechanical secondaries. I believe both had metering blocks using a power valve. The secondary venturi on these 2 models is larger than the primary, and combined with a down leg booster provides the extra cfm.
