Removing stubborn Con rod through bolts
Like it say....I have some billet rods with through bolts that just wont budge.
Im looking at changing the bolts hence my dilema.
Ive tried hammer & flathead punch on bolt threaded end, with the rod in vice, but dont want to break the rod.
Im assuming there must be some sort of rod pressing jig available? Ive never seen one. Nor can i see of a way to adequately support the rod to press them out.
Any suggestions? or a pic of a jig i can maybe copy. Drilling them out would be a last resort.
Much appreciated.

Save yourself much heart pain , since changing the bolts without pressing the new ones in will for sure require a machine shop to re-size the rods anyway just have the shop do the whole thing top to bottom!!!!

I would use a dead-blow or lead hammer.
If you have already struck the threaded end without the nut being present then you might not be able to use this technique (thereby mushrooming the end). Be sure to use new nuts with your new bolts.

That was an interesting video. It's exactly how I've done them in the past. Problem with these ones is they won't budge! I just don't want to pound the hell out of them. The air hammer was an interesting idea though.

since heat is used to install press fit wrist pins in rods why not some heat to free up the bolts ??

How do you trust a guy who doesn't even have a bench to bolt the vise down too? Hold it down with your foot?
Id also be using some kind of soft jaws on the rod...

He talked about using soft jaws for about 30 sec -- even described the lead alloy his used.Lizardracing wrote:How do you trust a guy who doesn't even have a bench to bolt the vise down too? Hold it down with your foot?

I found an old patent but it looked too scary. Lots of products to install the rod bolts.

Re: Removing stubborn Con rod through bolts
I wonder if some helpful person installed them with one of the stronger Loctite products.
Those can really augment a pressfit.

Re: Removing stubborn Con rod through bolts
If they are worth big bucks, and HAVE to have new bolts, you might end up grinding/milling the heads off the bolts and drive them through. At least that way you will have a good surface to drive against.
try heating one to 300f and see if that does anything, it probably won't but just on the OFF chance they did use locktite, see what happens.

Re: Removing stubborn Con rod through bolts
If you do MILDLY heat them give a squirt with lock eze or other high temp penetrating oil while hot
I'd rather press them out than beat them out- with the nut sharing the load
I take it you do not know the history of these rods
I'd wet mag before spending any money on them but hard to get the critical part with the bolt installed

Re: Removing stubborn Con rod through bolts
Stand up the rod in a piston press, push down on the pin boss.
Re: Removing stubborn Con rod through bolts
You mean pressing directly on the top of the small end...I don't think I'm game. ..even with an old pin installed. Anyone else done this?
Re: Removing stubborn Con rod through bolts
slight radius on the pusher and you will not damage the threads or expand
you can put some pressure on then whack the side with a heavy back up on the other side ( a big ball peen) or a little warmth
