New to LS1 and LS2 general HP question

Post by maca »

Hey guys
I assume you guys have the same LS engines in the USA as we have here in Australia. I have an old school car and I am looking at putting a modern engine in it. I want to keep it a non boosted engine and I would like to find an engine that will give me between 400 and 500 rear wheel HP. I have read a bit about the LS engines and the articles I have read claim that with nothing more than a cam, extractors and cold air intake this is possible. Is this the case or will I need more work to get to this HP level
cheers Maca

We have used LS1's in our road race stock cars for about 10 years. Here are some examples of some relatively low cost, mild builds that have performed well:

* LS1 346 ci, stock rotating assembly with stock 243 LS6 heads and GM ASA Hot Cam, Edelbrock LS1 performer RPM intake & Holley 80541 650 cfm carb, single stage scavenge dry sump with stock oil pump for pressure. 465 HP about 430 torque at the flywheel 6500 rpm max

* same motor as above but with 550/550 236/246 cam = about 490 HP 430 torque 6800 rpm max

* stroker LS1 383 ci, 11 to 1 comp, ported 243 heads, 600 lift cam, Victor jr Intake, Bo Laws 750 Holley, 3 stage dry sump = 560 HP 500 torque @ Flywheel. 6800-7000 rpm. Great easy to drive road race motor with torque everywhere.

We have had some similar build factory EFI motors that made a little less HP but usually 10-15 more lbs ft of torque.

your results may vary...

Thanks that's great info.
Just trying to work out what Engine put in this old car. LS1 and LS2 swaps a very popular in Australia. Also another popular engine for swaps is a Ford engine called a barra.
They are turboed and make good power on stock internals
