Mystery block
I've got a sbc that has code "V1011AFR" stamped in the pad on the front of the engine. I can find no information on the AFR suffix code other than a few other people seeking information and a listing for a 366BBC.
The number is clearly visible, no doubt that I am seeing it correctly. I know "V" is Flint, Michigan and 1011 is October 11th. The AFR is the mystery.
Thanks for any help!

Re: Mystery block
I don't have access to it right now. It is tucked into a 92 S10 with power brakes. I can't get my endo cam to where I can see it either. I'm trying to decide whether it is a good place to start or if I should source another block.
Re: Mystery block
I think that a 366" BBC should be a tall deck truck engine if not mistaken..
But please check me here.
Look at the top water pump bolts to see if it indeed a tall block?

Re: Mystery block
Is it a small block or big block? Does it have aluminum or iron heads? If it is a small block with aluminum heads my guess would be a builder resurfaced (decked) block that was marked with his engine build number and noted that the aluminum heads were AFR brand heads. Never seen or heard of GM engine code numbers like those but there is a first time for everything!

The problem with them is their too-small a cylinder diameter.
Imho, hunt up a good 454 P/U/Van/Bus, "core", engine and start with it.
I did for my now 496".
And looking back, I wished I would have found a good 502", "core", engine! Can you think about a 550 and some bigger bored and stroked engine....

Re: Mystery block
As far as I know, there isn't a 366" SBC engine, (350" and 400"), unless it's been measured to find out just what it's bore and stroke is?
Is there a 366" LS- engine? I don't know...

Re: Mystery block
It's definitely a small block. The 366 big block is the only "AFR" that I can find listed too.
Iron heads.
I need to figure out posting pics so I can show you guys what I'm looking at.

Re: Mystery block
Can you find the casting number? The casting number and date will normally be located on the bell housing flange if you can see it. Also on The bellhousing flange you might find CANADA cast in (283 block) or Hecho in Mexico (crate 350 block). The last three digits of the casting number were cast into the side of the block, at least from 1980 up. Also the damper will give you a hint as to what it is, someone correct me if I'm wrong, an 8" balancer is for a 350 4 bolt main, a 7" balancer with the timing tab on the drivers side is a 350 2 bolt main, and a 7" balancer with the timing tab straight up is a 305. A counter weighted balancer is a 400 or 383. A tiny skinny balancer is a 283. Dipstick tube was on the drivers side up to 1979, and the passenger side from 1980 up. Some GM crate engine blocks had the dipstick tube boss cast on both sides.
