The nice thing about that trans is the .67 OD really tames down 4.30 gears for street.

Thanks for the input. I was concerned on being able to make any power with a smaller camshaft. The engine has been on a stand for many years waiting to be used again. 20 years ago it had a 537/557 @.050 256/264 flat tappet. Transmission Specialties Super 8 converter with 4.10. it ran great and pulled hard to 7200.

If this is a game here is my speculation (BTW what does the winner get?) 222/226 @.050 108 lsa, .550 lift (on the mild side) Still make the mid 400 HP range plus a wider flatter torque curve. Cam king is right down the middle and Cam king grind @ 108 lsa to make it a little higher peak. More lift if the heads have been ported to flow at a higher lift.

Another question then. What can I get away with and run the power brakes on the street? I haven't bought a converter yet. Not really interested in turning above 6200. Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

Get rid of the power brakes would be my first off the list.

You can't go wrong if you call Mike Jones, mentioned the vacuum requirement and a order the cam from him.

i have an 87 mcss with the small 9" dual diaphram booster, and with a vac resevoir can added in line my engines 7" of vac is more than plenty for the brakes.

True, I know you have a ton of time in them. I wasn't including you in the "don't give a damn" segment :D

When choosing a camshaft should you match lift to the maximum flow of the cylinder head?

Does this mean you should match your duration @.050 to the ratio of time your foot contact's the gas pedal while the engine is running?

No.
There's is no relationship between the lift required for a specific application, and the max flow point of the port.
