FWIW, Charlie said that he would do his thing on my new EQ 50 cc chamber big valve 200 intake port heads for free IF I could afford to send them to him.

I would like to, but the shipping charges are a bitch!

I told Charlie that as little as I know about this stuff, my heads as received are BEAUTIFUL and don't need touched, but what do I know??

I have never seen prettier heads after looking at -461 or -601 heads..

Thank you jcisworthy for the good will... wow, define 'comradery'.

Pdq67, I know the feeling. -There's nothing like knowing you've done your best. After that, it feels like standing on a hilltop. Mr Pride and Mr Doubt might want whisper in your ear to upset your balance; either way you could slip. Mr Bliss knows how to stand there and enjoy the sense of accomplishment, soaking up the view.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think maybe half the people who participate on forums are not looking for long articles to read.

At the same time it's very tempting to write a long technical essay on:

1) Why high velocity ports are good?

2) Why 'heat management' cannot be duplicated on a flow bench?

Exhaust heat is not a critical factor in order to understand an exhaust port?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll just post pics of the exhaust port work next, space and time permitting.

Ok... I've got a lot of work to show how I modded these stock '64 Rambler V8 heads to work on the stroker 443... before we compare, gimme a million years ok? -just kiddn'

First thing to do when someone says 'you can't make that old Rambler V8 head work for 443 CID' is 'open 'em up' to get in there with some porting tools.

-gotta 'open the doors' to get in > starting with throat cuts & top cuts, done the 'old school way' (low cost, but labor intense... helps to make your own lathe to make a low buck precision pilot):

Not worried about the intake side, but next thing is to 'open up the doors' on the exhaust outlet side of the heads:

Fixin' to settle the issue...

-Showing homemade variable speed rig with foot pedal switch (7 amp Dayton on/off switch with spliced in 7 amp ceiling fan rheostat) -this enables two handed strength & concentration and slow enough speed not to dig holes...

So how did you determine the way you went about porting the heads? (The size and the shape of the ports?)

Lifelong story ya' know... We get the mechanical gene in our DNA? So many inspirational teachers and mentors to be thankful for, where to start?

Before we start porting these Rambler V8 heads, it's good to be armed with some knowledge (helps to know what you're doing)

So there are three general sections. I believe these are highly engineered for size and volume and all porting work should tend to keep the overall shape with uniform enlargement on all sides of the port walls except for the exposed roof area. Whereas when the 'exposed roof area of section 3 is left basically unrelieved it helps to make a more smooth transition on the roof side of the port from the trapezoidal mid section to outlet.

Description of the sections and their contributions to port flow and soundwave emission is a text I would like to write but I have no such text to present here at this time.

This is the worst head AMC made for Rambler V8, the '66/7 California emission control type (one year only- '66 in AMC's, two year only- '66/7 in Jeeps).

First end port:

-Same pair of heads, before and after.

I think the preceding pics show significant improvement was made.

Next, I'll show pics of the '64 RV8 exhaust ports that I ported for the 443 CID stroker.

So you just made the ports bigger and tried to keep the original shape. I suppose absent of ability to do any port or airflow development, it's not the worst thing when attempting to fill an additional 116 cu/in.

Thx

I could write a small book on Rambler V8 exhaust ports but I think 50% of forum participants are turned off by reading long explanations.

If anyone here could drive this car, I think they'd know why there are no excuses needed for this engine.

Since '56-'65 Rambler V8 heads are a close copy of '53-'62 Cadillac V8 heads & Cadillac made a 429 version of their engine, I think these ported heads get the job done on this 443 RV8 example.

Here's my ported '64 RV8 heads for this 443 engine.
