Building a Chevy 427 by scratch
After a ton of hours of find the all the parts and pieces of my 427 build. From the salvage yard to the internet I finally got going. This motor will be installed in a very nice street 69 Camaro that will be driven to mainly cruise ins and car shows. My gold was to build a very nice get up and go 427 that will run on pump gas. After I got the block back from the machine shop, I did the ''scrub a dub dub'' and then block paint. Here are some progress pictures of my progress.

What piston did you decide to use? Good luck on your build-up. I did a 427 for my camaro years ago, not a lot of piston options then.

I used Wisco Forged Pro Tru Street Series Part #PTS520A3. The block is a .030 Gen 4 out of a early eighties motor home. I'm using the stock rods. The crank is a std. 427 NOS I found on e-bay.

Will this be something like a 1969 era COPO build? What cam, heads and intake you going to use?

The cam shown installed is a Howards Gen 6 Hydraulic Roller CL 120146-12. The Roller lifters are Howards 91161 Maximum Effort. The Timing chain and gears are Howards 94309 double roller Gen 6 with Torrington bearing. Heads are Brodix Race-Rite Oval Aluminum. 115cc Chambers. 270cc Intake Runners.

I looked up those heads, they are nice but seem like they are in need of some hand work to flow well. Thanks, Charlie

Can't tell. Do your cam oil galley plugs have the little bleed hole?

You recommend drilling both front oil galley plugs? Is this just for chain lubrication or does this help with the Torrington bearing lubrication?

The original purpose of the bleed holes was to take care of an air lock at that end of the lifter channel.
You can purchase the plugs. Pretty small hole. I think I still have some. I will see this week what the hole size is.

Dave, I looked through my stash as I thought I had some too. Remind us of the hole size when you find them, my memory says .030" and it seems like they showed up in the Mark5/6 once the hyd roller cams came out, ie thrust plate. Not 100% on any of that info so anyone, feel free to clarify.Dave Koehler wrote:The original purpose of the bleed holes was to take care of an air lock at that end of the lifter channel.

Re: Building a Chevy 427 by scratch
I had .030 in mind also. I did have a few left. Pin gauged one and it came out at .0395.
So.... somewhere between a #61 drill (.039) a 1mm (.0394) or a #60 (.040) will do the trick.
Chamfer the hole on the inside side.
These have been around since the early days. Any hyd. lifter had a tendency to rattle up front on the first fire up of the day.
There was a potential to even momentarily starve the front rockers regardless of lifter style.
Chain lube is a bonus.

While talking about oil gallerys I see the front main oil gallery plug is out (lower front driver side).
Have the plugs along the side of that gallery been removed and cleaned out? (lower driver side).
