So as luck would have it my buddy with the Torino is having starter heat soak issues with the new headers I just installed... of course it would, why wouldn't it? Now I want to put a high torque mini starter on it, but I have the option of 164 or 184 tooth flywheel. That's a 50/50 shot for me because I haven't got a clue. The car has a C6 in it. Anybody know which I should be getting? The car is about 15 miles away from me right now, otherwise I'd go out and spend a few minutes counting. Thanks for any help if you know.

Here is a pic of the size difference between a stock style mid 70's 460/C6 starter on left and a PMGR 460/E4OD starter from a '92-'97 Ford F250/F350(yes, it will directly fit a 460/C6), that little starter kicks the crap out of the larger starter and gives MUCH more clearance for headers. I use one on my '79 Ranchero with 472/C6 combo and would never want to go back to the 70's style of starter.

FWIW, the '92-'97 PMGR starter uses a 164 tooth flex plate.

I know the size of the high torque starter is advantageous, that's why I want to use it. My question is about the tooth count on the flywheel

Ha! I found the info, but that's the first one that suggested 184. Welp, this should be fun. When the starter shows up I guess we'll know for sure then, right?

since a small block c6 uses a 164t flywheel I am going to go out on a limb and say the 429 will use the 184

That's was my same train of thought, but I found a few things, and had a few people, say otherwise. I guess I'll know for sure when I go to install the starter. I'll post the findings when I get there.

C6 passenger car big and small block are 164 tooth. Just different pcd on flex plate to crank bolts.

+1 The 184 is an FE flex plate . 164 for the 460. I have the same starter as pictured on the right . It's in my '78 F350 race car hauler. ZERO heat soak with Hooker 6811 headers. Best deal out there.

As you clearly know, It's a very easy deal on the 460 flexplate [not flywheel] they all are 164 regardless.....'78 Lincoln , JW wheel or Scat they are all the same tooth count. A flywheel is a different bird.
