When I started with AP Green back in '77, I was in the middle of watching something like 3,000 forge shops and foundries biting the dust, "PER YEAR", due to the f** EPA! and the Clean Air Act Amendment of 1990.
Most were smaller Mom and Pop operations that really couldn't afford to spend what the business was worth just to upgrade air pollution control equipment. Especially the small cupola shops melting scrap iron using coke, (and I think?), limestone to make hot liquid cast-iron to pour their parts out of.
Now, I am for clean air after spending over 13+ years with Missouri's Air Pollution Control Program, (MoDNR/APCP), mostly making new, revising, and doing away with, air law so know a bit about it!! BUT I wish that it would have been tempered some instead of so many companies and workingman's jobs being lost!
If you are interested in what our Gov. does on a daily basis, then hunt up and read the CFR every day, doing so will tell you. I used to read both it and the Federal Record daily back then.

6x6x16 INCHES??? if that is small what do you consider large It might weigh more than you do.
Must be making a cylincer block. Perhaps you can use a piece of durabar AND sleeves.....instead of one piece?

Can you do an aluminum block with STEEL Sleeves that are nikasil coated.
I heard steel can be nikasil plated with an extra preparation step that involves blasting with something but I can't remember what.

Not recommending this but they did manage to get it together.

If you just need one block you might try to CAD your way to a wax pattern and investment cast one.
You will have the best block around in any material you want.

Why is the required investment to start producing that boat engine $150m? How many boat engines should you expect to produce in order for that investment to make sense?SchmidtMotorWorks wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2018 1:17 am Not recommending this but they did manage to get it together.

Re: Compacted graphite iron
Really isn't much left once whittled down. And by smaller pieces I mainly talking about length. Instead of buying a whole mill run.

It can be done but I will loose lots of strength. Hard to explain with out someone knowing the ins and outs of the whole project. We actually run some other blocks done this way.
