Kirk Wooden,
Jerry was right. Granted nitro is the Chupacabra of fuels but the underlying principles of not enough firepower are the same.
For an only days old viewpoint on the same subject.

Thanks for that link. It was good to read.

As I said...I've seen what unreliable ignition does. Most people have no idea what happens when you have a parts breakage issue and never think to look at the ignition. Even on NA alcohol. You won't fire the cylinder every time and it shows at detonation in the bearing. Not the plug, but the bearings are getting flat. So you add a bit more fuel, snag a bearing, knock a bone out and you never question the weak ignition.

Now add a blower to the alcohol and it gets exponentially worse.

Too much ignition is far superior to an ignition on the edge, or an inferior ignition.

I did not think that Vertex mags had a strong spark, are yoy sure??

Think back, Vortex offered a mag with electronics inside, It may have needed a battery????????? I think the standard Vortex requires a .016 gap

Oldhead,
Local guy bought one. Never made it out of the driveway. What they did and badly was try to put an HEI unit inside.
The idea was fine for street rods but the execution was a fail.
Maybe they fixed it by now.

Unfortunately, the old adage applies in a lot of respects, 'walk down pit lane and look at what the winners are running' ,if you want to be up with them you most likely will be running similar to what they run, yes ,there are winners that don't follow the crowd but their head is usually in a slightly different place as well, they will commit time and effort to make what they are running work, and nothing beats experience [except buying in a guru], a guy that has mega runs under his belt in a given category can call shots that others may or may not see.

Technically Pro mags are primary current generators that use external coils to generate spark energy then use the mag body again to distribute [and they do need maintenance to operate at peak performance] , Vertex make external coil mags as well ,but the most likely one you will see in a lower price bracket will be internal pure magneto form.

If you could get your hands on a Jacobs FC4000 (hen's teeth) I believe that would do the job as far as spark is concerned, just leaves the rest of the equation to pay for then...
