BBC and a Mag

Post by vht »

I'm building a 40 chev coupe gasser, going to run a 427 BBc, 6-71, at this time it'll be carbed. I want to run a vintage mag and it's been a long time since I fooled with one and then we run Vertex. Anyone on here got any experience with these? I've been looking at used ones, Joe Hunt, Moose, Vertex, Ronco and Mallory. Which is better, internal coil, like we ran, or external. I meant transformer, I should say. I've seen some with a regular style cap and rotor, a few had what looked like a ford cap and rotor, might not have the room for that. The Joe Hunt had a transformer I never seen before. I'm going to send what I get to Spud Miller, Fuel Injection Enterprises for him to go through it, he helped me out once on my dragster injection, just wanted some opinions from here before I buy something.

Go to fuelinjectionent.com and look around there.

The Mallory can compete with the MSD mag up to about Pro Mag 12 IIRC, the problem is with electronics. The Mallory doesn't play well with them. The vertex, either with internal or external coil don't produce as much energy as the Mallory or MSD mag.

I'm thinking just buy new from one of the specialist.
When you buy a used one you have to send it to them anyway and your luck may not be so good.
You may wind up with almost as much as a new one.
Can't depend on what Seller Bubba claims.

I'd call Spud and ask the question you're asking here. No funny business from Spud.

For the vintage look, the Vertex has it. The Vertex will have plenty of juice for that combo.

I'm leaning toward the Vertex, I'm going to call Spud in the next day or two.

Called Spud, he said to get a Vertex with built in coil. He said it'd work great. I'd like to find one with tach drive, that would be pretty cool to have.

If you are just doing it for the look one of these might be a better choice.
