Ford FE combo

Post by chilly460 »

I'm working up a 416" Ford FE combo using some parts I have laying around, along with a few pieces I've picked up recently.

This will be a 4.08" x 3.98" combo using block and crank I have on hand, block is already .030" and will get a fresh hone just to clean up . Crank will be internally balanced.

Already picked up Autotec 1.670CH pistons with 5cc reliefs. Should come in right at 10.5:1, will cut heads as necessary.

I'm porting a set of garden variety OEM low riser C1AE heads, I'm using the following flow numbers as a ballpark to shoot for
156 109
222 151
257 180
272 195
281 197

Cam is already purchased, 247/246 284/294 108 at 104 .586/.600 solid flat tappet

Car is 63 Mercury Marauder street car, full weight (4100lbs) with a TKO500 and 4.10 gear.

I picked up an Edelbrock 2x4 Performer RPM Air Gap (uses Edelbrock carbs) as part of the deal for cheap, and think it would go well with the old school combo. I'm gathering info on carb size, seems guys don't like the 500cfm suggestion from Edelbrock.

1 3/4" TriYs into 2.5" exhaust.

Wanted a ~6000rpm HP peak, shift it at 6500max Torque peak around 4500

Love for it to make 475hp/475ftlbs...realistically shooting for 450hp depending on how well I do on the head porting

Car is manual brake so not worried about vacuum.

Any suggestions on overall combo, valve size (deciding between 2.15 or 2.09 intake/1.65 exhaust), carb size would be appreciated.

Sounds like a great street fun combo! Edelbrock has the new AVS carbs with annular boosters you might try.

What's not to like? They are usually bolt-on-and-go.

What's the collector size on the headers? I'd go 3" pipes if the collectors are 3".

Thanks all for the replies. Headers are 3”, prior combo didn’t need big tubes so I went easy and had 2.5” pinch bent, would like to go to 3” mandrel bent

3" mandrel bent pipes would be worth the cost, in my opinion. Or even 3 pinch bent.

Is that cam 247/256 @ 0.050"? It says 247/246.

Just checking.

I would think you'd want the 600 Edelbrocks or possibly even the 750's. No personal experience, though.

FE head flow is fake. Considering the intake manifold has the pushrods and about an inch or so of port length, any numbers without that manifold are fake and useless compared to "normal" heads.

Methinks your horsepower and torque numbers are extremely conservative with that cam and that cylinder flow I think you should be significantly north of 500

Are you dead set on those heads?

I am curious about the compression ratio with those heads ... I thought the C1AE heads for an early FE have 64cc combustion chambers; maybe not, I might be thinking about some other casting number..

Last C1AE heads I had in were +/- on 72cc and had been resurfaced as well as a littke taken out of the chamber around the valves. Intake port height at the gasket face was 1.95"

Chilly460 - what is the intake port height at the gasket face on your heads?
Craig.
