FlatTappet vs Roller cam comparison: XE256H vs 264HR

Post by BigBlockMopar »

I'm wondering how 'different' the following 2 cams will be compared to each other (idle & midrange power) in a street engine with a 500-5000rpm range?
One is a hydraulic flattappet XE256H, the other is a hydraulic roller 264HR.

The XE256H is currently installed in a Mopar 360ci with 11.3:1 CR running on propane. Lifters are converted to solids and currently running it tight-lashed with 1.5 rockers. Might go to 1.6 rockers.
The heads are small '302' ('80s 318ci) iron heads, smoothed cambers/ports, stock, (but backcut intake) valves. Megasquirt ECU ignition control / IMPCO Carbed fuel system.
Besides a valve guide issue which shows up at idle, the engine feels strong at just about every rpm-range upto 4500rpm.
The small port heads are probably limiting the engine to rev much higher.

Both cams duration at .050 seem very close together, but their adv. duration @ .006" are more apart from each other.
It's not mentioned on the card but I wonder if the roller would have some 'lope' in the idle?

(The XE256H camcard is spec'd with 1.5 rockers. The 264HR camcard is spec'd with 1.6 rockers.)

Go for the 264, quieter running and a lift advantage. Still perfectly smooth (smoother on LPG ).

Why the “computer controlled” cam? Are you looking for the wider lsa?

To be honest I can get this still new 264-roller cam for a good deal, at half its new price.
Of course I know this is totally not the way to be picking a cam, but since it soo close to the specs of the current tappet-cam I'm running, I was wondering what if any the changes would be.

Also, I have a mid '80s factory rollercammed 318ci, which could benefit from a nice upgrade if I won't use the cam in the 360ci.
The 360ci would need rollerlifters, pushrods and intermediate shaft, while the 318ci wouldn't need anything to change to this cam.

I learned the guy I was supposed to buy the cam from had already sold it to someone else, so if there's a roller cam to be bought anytime soon by me I will at least get one that's custom ground and works with the engine better.
