Customer emailed with noisy Morel 4603 lifters today. After change from 20W50 to BR30 on the dyno all is good. Engine builder was receptive when I spoke to him on the phone. He admitted he was old school and did things the way he had for 30 years. Explained centistoke to him and he appreciated the education. Customer just emailed me and engine builder said all is good now.
I assume that's the cSt I see referred to in specs? For example, regular old Castrol 5w30 is listed "Viscosity @ 100C, cSt 10.7" ...with 10.7 being the centistoke spec? And cSt @ 40C of 75.1

Is that rating @ degrees F correct? All of the oils list their cSt ratings in Celsius. Though 100F is close to 40C, which is usually listed. At 100F, they're usually still relatively thick, though.

The old Joe Gibbs stuff. Driven BR30. After breakin, Driven Hot Rod and Mobil 1 High Mileage work great. AFter that any oil with a centistoke number of under 20 at 100 degree F.
I just want to make sure I get this right, I am looking for an oil with an cSt@40*C of less than 20? The mobile1 high mileage Synthetics are anywhere from 50 to 104 depending on the weight. I just want to make sure I get the right stuff as the engine with Morels is going on the dyno in a week. I don't care to use the driven stuff as it will be in a truck and would like to use stuff that I can get at any store where ever I am .

For my own education what brand is BR30?
Thanks, Dave

Im sure you mean under 20cst@100°C(212°F) not 100°F !?
Will also depend on what oil temp the given engine runs but with a Vis range from 16.3 to 21.9 cst@100°C/212°F there are plenty of Xw/50 oils that comply. But safer to go for Xw/40 most certainly.
Edit**that is unless you are talking about the COLD end of the scale? Like 5W etc? Have I misunderstood you?
Cheers,

You probably will not find an engine oil that meets his recommendation. 20 cSt @ 100 F would have to be something way less than 10 weight.

The brand of oil I use shows oils with 20 cSt @ 100* C (which is what he said, not at 100* F) in 4 different grades. A 0w20, 5w30, 5w40, and 5w50 with the 0w20 8.3 cSt and the 5w50 20.26 and I doubt the .26 will hurt anything.
Of course, those are racing 100% synthetics and they ain't cheap. I personally run the 5w30 but I don't use hydraulic lifters.

Post #4 says 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

That's why I asked. He says 100F but all the oils list their ratings at 100 degrees C...which happens to be almost 40*C, a rating they also use in their specs. I didn't just pull 100F out of thin air. He said it first so I asked for clarification.

Celsius, I miss typed this.
Chris, thanks for the correction.

Another example of the metric system jacking shit up. Also, look into SUS for oil viscosity measurement. Also look into centipoise (spelling may be wrong) as its part of the same set of measurements.

I use Valvoline 10w30 VR1 or conv, for most engines that I do. I see the centistoke number is good and I don’t have hyd roller lifter complaints (Morel, LS7 or Shaver lifters).
On the Harley’s, Mobil 1 20w50 V-twin oil seems to work very well with those hyd roller lifters.
