No cam expert here but...
I got the bug. Did a few 1/8mile races this summer and ofcourse now looking to squeeze more out of the little 400. This thing was never dynoed, only tuned and tinkered by yours truly. ET's and 60ft are kinda irrelevant from this year as I had no traction compared to most others. I did score 8.10 on the best traction track. Next year will be different.
So here's the pondering. Can't get rid of the idea maybe a more taylored cam might give a few more smiles. Cam in it now was originally for a 383 but I changed and built a 400, slapped it in and set it 106 instead of 104. Any ideas of where to improve on parts for more grunt appreciated. I know what I need to do with the car but not sure about the engine. Been looking at 1.6 or 1.7 rockers. Here's the specs:
400 Dart SHP sbc 6" rods
AFR 210 heads
7104 Performer RPM (Vic Jr or a good single plane probably gonna happen)
Edelbrock 1407 carb
Cam is 232/232 hyd roller, .540/.529, 108LSA set at 106ICL
1.5 Rockers
10.8:1 Compression
Spider n dogbone w Morel 4708 lifters
Engine is a bitch to tune, I run all kinds of pump gas in it and it runs good but real hot days I get run on at shut down. Pretty sure the compression is a tad too high for pump gas on hot days. Cold days no problems.

Re: No cam expert here but...
Add about 30 degrees more on the Cam and add .150", open up the heads a bunch.

Put a Jomar "Powercone" PHENOLIC carb spacer on it and find a way to make the engine run cooler; under 170f water temp.

Re: No cam expert here but...
RLocking out timing so it always runs full advance allows you to close up the throttle plates, making it easier to shut off when hot. More rocker ratio on the intake side never hurts.
Re: No cam expert here but...
Why not try 1.7 rockers? Mix & match, may get you where need to be without pulling the cam.
Re: No cam expert here but...
I'm not opposed to trying 1.7 rockers. In my head that extra lift might just be what is lacking. As long as it wont take away any big deal of reliability I'm open to everything.

Re: No cam expert here but...
It would be interesting to see how a 950HP carb would run on it, agree try a single plane.

The Holley 300-25 Strip Dominator is the best single plane for the money. The friends I know using the Edelbrock carb always went faster with a change to a Holley carb. A 780 cfm 3310 if you can find one, or a 4780 800 double pumper is a good start. 400 inch motors like big carbs.
So much to do, so little time...

What Edelbrock carb did they use and what Holley carb did they replace it with?rfoll wrote: ↑Tue Aug 21, 2018 9:51 am The Holley 300-25 Strip Dominator is the best single plane for the money. Same Edelbrock as yours, changed to a 4779 Holley double pumper. You didn't tell us much about the car. What does it weigh, what kind of trans/converter, and rear gears? I ran 11.5 quarter , low 7s eighth with a 406 at 9.7:1 cr.
So much to do, so little time...
Re: No cam expert here but...
Car 70 Camaro is not gonna be like this next year. More gear, more tire, less weight up front, more weight in the rear, softer rear etc. I think the single plane strip dominator and a bigger Holley is something I wanna try. Either way here's the biggest changes for next year
3.42 gears to 4.10
275 40 17 tires to 275 50 17
Glass hood, nose and fenders possibly. Probably not fenders, they dont weigh much in stock form.
Move battery to the rear
Better rear shocks with better adjustability
