Valve lock question

Post by kid vishus »

Howdy all, new guy here with a question.

I am in the process of fixing my damaged bracket motor, and was wondering which is better, 10* locks, or Super 7's. I have heard both ways. I have run both and never had any problems with either, but I would prefer to run whichever is best.

If it matters, the motor is a 402" SBF that should 'see' max rpm of 7200, shift point around 6600 or so. It is 4" bore, 4" stroke, 15-1 compression, solid roller cam 276/286 @ .050 .714/.714 lift 108 lsa, ported/epoxied 4v cleveland heads that flow 360/249 cfm @ .700 lift.

They are '70 factory iron closed chamber heads that have been milled to 60 cc chambers.

I prefer to run super 7 style on everything because I feel it is stronger and has better clamping capacity, but in most situations I have seen the 10 deg stuff work just fine it is also super common and readily available almost anywhere. We use plenty on 10 deg stuff but on the best endurance and drag engines we use del west which is super 7.

Thanks.

Since the heads had cheap valves in them, most of which are now bent, I will start over in that department; new valves, new retainers, new locks.

7 degree collet has a higher clamping force. The Super 7's are thicker in construction as well. I have seen plenty of 10 degree locks crack.
