Spring Recomendations

Post by da z06 »

Speed Talk,

I'm about to once again (3rd time this year) to change cams on my combo. I recently installed a Hi-Ram intake on my LS7 and I feel that Ill be leaving power behind/not maximize the combo with my current cam ground by Cam Motion:
@.050
15.5
53.5
66.0
12.0
109
117
.657/.648 lift

Current springs are PSI1516ML and Ti intake/Hollow stem exhaust, Ti retainers and Johnson lifters.

My new cam specs will be ground on EHI (intake) and EHX (exhaust) comp lobes and quite more duration than current. Lift will be .675 with 1.8" LS7 rockers.

I gave comp a call and the guy I spoke to recommends the Comp Conical: 7228-16

Rate: 438 lbs
Inner Diameter: .650'' Top, .920'' Bottom
Outer Diameter: 1.020'' Top, 1.290'' Bottom
Seat Load: 136 lbs at 1.800''
Open Load: 412 lbs at 1.170''
Coil Bind Height: 1.125''

After running those springs and lift thru my calculator I get the following:

Install Height Calculation:
Coil Bind Height: 1.125
Intake Valve Lift: 0.675
Exhaust Valve Lift: 0.675
Coil Bind Clearance: 0.060
Intake Recommended Install Height: 1.860
Exhaust Recommended Install Height: 1.860
Coil Bind Clearance Calculation:
Coil Bind Height: 1.125
Intake Valve Lift: 0.675
Exhaust Valve Lift: 0.675
Intake Recommended Install Height: 1.860
Exhaust Recommended Install Height: 1.860
Intake Coil Bind Clearance: 0.060
Exhaust Coil Bind Clearance: 0.060
Open Spring Pressure Calculation
Spring Rate lb/in: 438
Intake Valve Lift: 0.675
Exhaust Valve Lift: 0.675
Intake Seat Rate lbs: 109.7
Exhaust Seat Rate lbs: 109.7
Intake Spring Open lb: 405.4
Exhaust Spring Open lb: 405.4

Seat Spring Rate Calculation by Install Height
Spring Rate lb/in: 438.00
Install Height: 1.800
Intake Recommended Install Height: 1.860
Exhaust Recommended Install Height: 1.860
Intake Spring Rate lb/in Gain/Loss: -26.280
Exhaust Spring Rate lb/in Gain/Loss: -26.280

Seat Rate lbs: 136.00
New Intake Seat Rate lbs: 109.7
New Exhaust Seat Rate lbs: 109.7

I will have to install higher than recommended and I dont want to do so, not to mention the loss in open and seat pressure.

I feel that the Comp Conical: 7256-16 will be a better option.

Rate: 485 lbs
Inner Diameter: .660'' Top, .990'' Bottom
Outer Diameter: 1.060'' Top, 1.390'' Bottom
Seat Load: 160 lbs at 1.900''
Open Load: 495 lbs at 1.210''
Coil Bind Height: 1.165''

My calculator give me the following:

Install Height Calculation:
Coil Bind Height: 1.165
Intake Valve Lift: 0.675
Exhaust Valve Lift: 0.675
Coil Bind Clearance: 0.060
Intake Recommended Install Height: 1.900
Exhaust Recommended Install Height: 1.900
Coil Bind Clearance Calculation:
Coil Bind Height: 1.165
Intake Valve Lift: 0.675
Exhaust Valve Lift: 0.675
Intake Recommended Install Height: 1.900
Exhaust Recommended Install Height: 1.900
Intake Coil Bind Clearance: 0.060
Exhaust Coil Bind Clearance: 0.060
Open Spring Pressure Calculation
Spring Rate lb/in: 485
Intake Valve Lift: 0.675
Exhaust Valve Lift: 0.675
Intake Seat Rate lbs: 160.0
Exhaust Seat Rate lbs: 160.0
Intake Spring Open lb: 487.4
Exhaust Spring Open lb: 487.4
Seat Spring Rate Calculation by Install Height
Spring Rate lb/in: 485.00
Install Height: 1.900
Intake Recommended Install Height: 1.900
Exhaust Recommended Install Height: 1.900
Intake Spring Rate lb/in Gain/Loss: 0.000
Exhaust Spring Rate lb/in Gain/Loss: 0.000
Seat Rate lbs: 160.00
New Intake Seat Rate lbs: 160.0
New Exhaust Seat Rate lbs: 160.0

Another spring I been considering is the PAC 1207x (155/436).

What the guys with more experience recommend? Any other suitable options? Any comments on cam recommendations? Again, LS7, Hydraulic Roller.

Thanks!

8620 cam core material, would be my 'must have'
unless you plan to change it again in 4 months...the Comp core might make it that long
too lazy to make power w/o boost
