On early Jap bikes I was always told when starting a cold engine not to raise the engine RPM over 3000 while using the choke. The idea is that raw fuel is burning down the pipe and causing bluing. I have always abided by that as it makes sense to me. Most are double-walled so bluing is minimal but some single-walled chrome aftermarket blued quickly.

I have seen at least one warning label on new after market pipes saying to avoid excessive use of the choke to avoid blue pipes...

My self and some others consider blue pipes a sign the engine actually runs.. :D
