5.3 LS cam for turbo app

Post by Raybo »

I am assembling a 5.3 for a guy and he brought me all his parts. The cam and pistons are not going to work in my opinion. Want to see what you guys think.

stock 243 casting heads
Stock flat tops form a 5.3HO
Cam specs
@ .050 248 270
.615 .596
LSA 115
Installed on 110

I think he needs dish forged pistons and a lot smaller cam he disagrees.

Thanks for any input

248 270!!!

Yeah thats not gonna work at all

Do a stage 2 turbo cam from little john motorsports or brian tooley

You dont need big cams in a turbo 5.3. A stage 2 stock bottom end 5.3 my friend owns, also stock heads went 8.02 at 173 letting off at 1200 ft almost since it pushed coolant lol. 24 psi in a 2700 lb fox body

I think around 216 / 226 @ .050 would be more on the mark !

Found him one 219/223 on a 114 3 degrees advance straight up.
.617/.595 lift

close enough Craig?

static compression come to 10.5:1. I think he will have to be conservative with the boost 10psi. Am I wrong?

From all reports, the "Sloppy stage 2" camshaft is supposed to be pretty good in a turbo 5.3. A good friend of mine is going to run one in his S475 5.3 LS hopefully next year, as the camshaft he's running now (basically a stock stick) sounds to stock for his liking, but is making near 700hp

Wait for Mike Jones to see what he says. A turbo cam is going to be lazy at NA period!!
Another is John at DRC that has many grudge cars going fast and not killing springs!!

Not really. Most of these ls cars run very well with “turbo” cams. Not lazy at all. In fact most na cams are decent turbo cams in combos like these but just dont need alot of duration.

Wants to run pump E85 but I cautioned against that. You may get E70. I would like to see him set it up for pump 93

No issues with e70-e85 basically. E70 will just become richer if you tuned on e85 and both have about the same knock resistance from everything i’ve seen on it.

Pump "ethanol" E85 will require a lot richer mixture but will also tolerate a lot more compression than pump "gasoline" 93.

What's the control system? Is this with a fully electronic programmable FI and ignition? Flex fuel sensor?

Yes something in that vicinity is fine. Less comp if possible , 9:1 will make it less picky on fuel and tolerant of more boost, it will still drive nice off boost too.
But, what turbo/s if he using?
Craig.
