406 oil pressure issues
I’ve got a motor in for refreshment and updates
It’s got roughly 40 passes on it which are mud truck passes so down and back tracks and some circle track passes
In the videos you can watch it idle right around 20psi in staging then when he lays in to it the oil pressure will go up to roughly 50-55 then will slowly come down to 30ish. Let’s off for the corner it will come up some then coming down the back half of the track it will come down to 25ish
So on tear down I thought it would probably need bearings and what, not tore it apart and they look perfect it really doesn’t need anything at all!
It’s got a claimer style pan with crank scraper and baffles inside std volume Melling pump with good pick up and right at 1/2 of oil pick clearance. Had him drop a quart out of it so 4.5 quarts and did the same thing. Tried to add extra and just pushed it out
This thing only turns 5500 down the front and 6500ish on the way back
Do I just try different pump and see what happens or do we need to try something different with pan only thing with that because of rules we need to run a stock style pan

Re: 406 oil pressure issues
try a corvette oil pan with the trap doors. they work on auto crossing and track days
Re: 406 oil pressure issues
Sounds like a bit of a condition from oil that being highly foamed, especially with oil pan rules and restrictions.
Does it have a windage tray? What oil and oil weight are you running? Is there an oil temp gauge and what temp does it run? What is the pressure cold at idle?
Do you know what pressure relief spring is in the pump now?
Is this a newer problem with an engine that has operated differently in the past?
If the pump can be tested now out of the engine, rig it in a bucket of that oil with a plate on the output and a gauge and spin the pump and see what psi the bypass opens up at.

Oil level in the pan is critical on 400's and 383’'s.
Drop a bit more oil out. It will reduce foaming.
Use a different oil.

If adding a extra Qt pushed out oil everywhere then I would drop down to a 4 Qt level and see how the pressure responds.
How much rod side clearance are you running?

Re: 406 oil pressure issues
This was a new build this spring std pressure spring cold idle is around 45 I wanna say this is with either vr1 10-30 or northland 20-50 on my run stand it held 55-60 at 2000rpm during break in
No oil temp gauge but it is 11.5-1 on e85 I don’t think it ever got over 185 degrees other then one time it hit 240 when it blew the belts off
I can check side clearance tonight
The oil did look foamed when I dropped it but at the time almost thought it was moisture from never getting any temp in it

Re: 406 oil pressure issues
Side clearance on rods is .018-.019 depending on which set of rods
That is just feeler gauging between the two rods

Re: 406 oil pressure issues
How's the cam bearings? What about trying a high pressure spring....but if the bearings look perfect, if it ain't broke.
Re: 406 oil pressure issues
Rod side clearance affecting oil pressure is really a myth. Don't worry about that especially at those numbers.
Make sure it has a 160 degree thermostat to avoid running hard on cold oil.
What clearances are the rods and mains? What shape are the lifter bores and lifters in? These are three of the places that really affect oil pressure and can significantly increase oil whipping and foaming from the rotating crank and rod big ends.
You should get a full length strpper screen type windage tray under that crank. The crankscraper installed is not enough, it wipes oil but does not control what I like to call "THE CHAOS IN THE CRANKCASE"!
I still think this may be a case of foaming oil.

Re: 406 oil pressure issues
For the life of me I can’t remember rod and main clearance and can’t find my sheet
Lifter bores seam to be in pretty good shape
We are going to run a different oil pan that’s has a screen and couple trap doors. I got it approved through the new rules this coming year
