Pilots for checking valve seat run-out

Post by hbps1978 »

I have a Sunnen VS-1005 valve seat run-out gauge set. I'm wanting to check valve seat run-out on a brand new set of AFR Eliminator SBC heads. I assume that I will need a .389" top pilot and something in the 8mm range diameter pilot for the valve guide. Should I use a straight, tapered or adjustable pilot to check valve seat run-out. This is my first valve seat run-out gauge and attempt at using. Any help greatly appreciated.

I use straight pilots for checking run out and cutting seats. You will need a selection of sizes (0.01mm increments at least) as the tighter the pilot fit, the more accurate the measurement.
