Need help: steering linkage/oil pan clearance problem

Post by Chevyfan70 »

I have a stock front end 72 nova. Just dropped in a sbc with deep sump Stefs pan and have no clearance. Had to take out the front steering to tie-rods. Looking for a rack and pinion to replace stock linkage but not sure what to get. Looks like 3-4" clearance between cross member and pan. Any ideas??

I'd worry that a system just to create clearance would bring some unplanned bump steer. Maybe not as big a deal at the dragstrip as real roads (although big toe changes as front end height increases aren't likely to help handling or drag).

Simpler and less risk of messing up your handling by notching the pan for steering rod clearance. Or find a pan that fits your application better. You're talking about redesigning the whole steering system- something even pros approach with much caution and a big checkbook. Shimmy at high speeds is no fun at all for a driver!
