Roof Repair,Vinyl Top.

Working on the roof of my 68 Chevelle project today. I bought the car as a project ready for paint, body work done, in primer. Well I knew by looking at it the project was nowhere near ready for paint. The price was fair, lots of new parts, and it was a relatively rust free car. Lots of old fender bender repairs etc. My intention was to do a body off on the car, that's what I'm doing. Today I started to take the roof to bare metal and was trying to grind the primer that was applied a number of years ago and am having a heck of a time doing it. I'm using a 36 grit green disk on a sander /polisher and after a short while its like the disk flat stops cutting and just burnishes the finish. Underneath the top primer coat is like a combination of light surface rust and old vinyl top adhesive. Any suggestions on how to get to the metal surface without making a bunch of heat and making a big wavy mess? I tried a 3M scotchbrite rice cake, but that wasn't cutting it very well either. Anything else to try? Thanks.

Airplane grade, paint remover. Most auto paint stores sell. It WILL soften bondo-beware ! Messy, but gets the job done. Good Luck, flyingwedge.

Well I got the primer removed with abrasives and then resorted to Klean Strip Aircraft stripper to remove the top adhesive residue. Pretty much did the trick and wasnt a huge mess to deal with and no surprises with the roof panel to deal with. Another step checked off the list!!
