Th400 no second gear???

Post by Chipped tooth » Fri May 01, 2015 10:30 pm

Well I got myself a Th400 that has a tci manual valve body reverse pattern.

It lost 2nd gear many years ago witch it rolled the sprag.... So I installed a different drum from another Th400 that also had the 16 element sprag. Worked fine for a few years but then sat for 5 or 6 years.

About 4 years ago when I removed car from storage it didn't have second gear again.... Well maybe 1 or 2 times but that was 4 years ago.

So I figured it rolled the sprag again, it acted like you popped it in neutral in second

So I pulled the sprag expecting to find it buggerd up again.

Not the case, it looked fine and drum looked good. I had already ordered a new 34 element sprag hence my previous post.

I installed it along with a Coan 9" 5000 stall converter.

Sprague free wheel turning clockwise with drag side up..... That's what my manual said.

Now it acts like it's still in 1 st upon second shift and then it acts as if it's binding in 3rd.... Wtf!

So I pulled the pan and nothing smells burnt or any heavy material in pan.
Pulled valve body and 're set the 1/8 gap on the spring and ball bearing. Was a little tite.

New filter and fill and it's the same damn thing......
How could a new sprag and converter cause such a issue?

Anyone have any advice on this?

Thanks Bigfoot, I was going to wait till Monday to post on YB if I didn't hear any ideas in ST

I'm going to pull the trans today and check it over a bit more.

Update on my no second gear issue.

I pulled the trans apart and everything looked brand new, air checking the clutch packs revealed I had a massive leak from the intermediate piston.......

Both seals were broke to pieces.... Luckily I had a Th400 kit I could steal the seals from.

All is well now!

Definitely!
I was expecting the worst.

I can't believe it didn't burn up any clutches, seal was practically crumbling...

Wondering if this worked well once back in the car. The seals make sense for a no second gear but doesn't explain the bind on the 2-3 shift.
Sprag installed upside down or rolled and locked up would cause this.

My Turbo 400 was slipping bad in second, turns out the case was cracked, I'm going to look into a new case the next time around..

ATI Performance Products has the best TH400 case. Not cheap, but strong, and SFI approved, so no shields required.
