Retrofitting a later model trans in a '83 ford truck

Post by travis » Fri Sep 11, 2015 3:21 pm

I've been looking hard at retrofitting a later model 4 speed auto w/OD in to my '83 F-150. I'm getting tired of running 3500 rpms keeping up with traffic and the 11mpg highway mileage is getting old. This is a 4900 pound truck with a mildly built 351w, C-6, and 3.55's. I don't race it but it does get used on occasion to pull 4000+ pounds. I'm looking at using a Bauman TCU and a used trans, and from what I am reading the 4R70W and the E4OD are the best options. Which trans, in stock condition, would work better for me? Which would be the easier retrofit? Which years use a mechanical speedo drive?
Ford transmissions are unknown territory to me...any input would be appreciated.
