Saginaw trans gear material

Can anyone confirm if the Saginaw trans gears are 8620 steel...........or?
I'm going to weld a cluster.

Don't know about your welding rod but look at Eutectic Xuper 680 rod. From what I understand, if it's steel based this rod will weld it. They are $$$.

Were GM 'Saginaw' gears cut from SAE 8620 steel? Probably. There is almost a century of automotive experience with the alloy, and it is the first choice in North America. That said, given that GM bought steel in mill runs, they *could* have used something else if it worked and saved money --- New Process and Warner Gear sometimes did this. My guess is that, whatever it was, it probably welds about the same.
