4.56 gears in Ford 7.5

Post by ap72 » Wed Mar 30, 2016 9:51 am

Will a 4.56 gear set last worth a damn in a Ford 7.5" rear? The pinion is awfully small.

It's on a Ranger, 2wd, trakloc (posi), 31" all terrain tires. Max 300hp, currently about 160hp.

It shouldn't be a problem with an automatic transmission. A stick on the other hand ??????

I was running shorter gears than that with a 7" R&P and a lot more power. The gears were never a problem, everything downstream was the problem. But then the biggest axles they made for that rear were 26 spline and the rearend housings felt like they were made out of 16 gauge, and there is only so much bracing you can do.

It's a stick. I'm starting to lean towards a 8.8 rear with 4.88 gears. It'll be an extra $150 or so but I'll get disc brakes and a little heavier built rear. This is just for a off-road toy that I'll drive in the street to get to the trails.

Are 9" rear ends all that pricey?

Yes.

But I pulled an 8.8 last weekend, came with a 4.10, we'll see how that goes and I may step up to 4.88.

Hard to have too much gear with a little 2.3L.
