Convert Cuckoo clock (Gov lock) to regular posi

Post by GLHS60 » Sat Apr 16, 2016 2:51 am

Anyone ever converted a GM Gov lock to a regular posi??

A local guy did some years ago, he removed all the Gov lock parts and used a factory S spring instead.

He also welded the "ramp" on the axle gear that normally gets wound up to lock it.

I recently did a search on converting one and the only thing I found was a guy who did the same thing but he didn't weld the ramp.

Curious if anyone else ever converted one and if they welded the "ramp" or not.

Thanks

I'd just replace it with a posi. Personally, it's a waste of time to try and "convert" it, and having to source the parts, modify, etc.....

Not worth the trouble......

I wouldn't bother either. The case itself is pretty weak. They seem to break the cases before they wear out. I've even seen them in perfectly driving trucks with chunks broken out of the case and large longitudinal cracks forming but not broken all the way around yet. That's a nice how-do-you-do when you just have the cover popped off for the annual fluid change.

Do it once, do it right.

I appreciate your replies but it's just something I have to try, I already have the gov lock and S spring so no $$ is needed. I'm old and feeble, Just trying to determine if the ramp welding or not is an issue.

Thanks

As a word of advice, that case will likely break under use, and welding on it will make it weaker. Honestly, if it were mine, I'd just run it until I can get it done right by replacing it....You'll be money ahead...

It's just the ramp on the axle gear that gets welded if any welding is done at all.

Just trying to figure out if it even needs welding and the reason behind it.

Surely the ramp won't even work with no wind up mechanism ??

Its only a low power street car running 75 series tires.
