have been made through the years?

I know about Ford's '69 Cougar Eliminator 2-speed prototype, but what others have been made?

Say from the flat-head days until now.. Cars, trucks, etc., etc... sorta deal...

Please think about this for a minute and post back..

Thanks,

I'm not aware of any that are suitable for what I think you want to use this for ...

I am surprised that nobody in the aftermarket has picked up on a 2 speed gearbox that plugs in to the pinion support of a 9". Seems like a real natural to me.

Quick-change rear end ...

I suspect the reason 2-speed rear ends never caught on is that modern transmissions with lots of ratios and a good spread between low and top make them redundant.

Extra weight in the axle is extra unsprung weight which is A Bad Thing if handling characteristics or ride quality on bumpy surfaces matters (which it does, in a road car).

A friend of mine has a crazy pickup truck that was made from an early-eighties GM 5 ton truck (with a shortened frame). It has the same type of truck two-speed axle that was shown in a video above.

The B&J 2-speed OD unit.

I'm in the process of installing one of these modern transmissions in an older Ford. The floor surgery and other fabrication required is Not Trivial!

It would be SO much easier if there were a 2 speed rearend option. No room for an overdrive unit after the trans without floor surgery etc.

This is 2017, you can solve the speedometer problem by putting a VSS on the unit and use a $200 VSS-to-cable drive control box. Done!

Oh, no doubt. A ZF 8-speed is loooong. The end-on transverse 7-8-9 speed transmissions are a marvel of packaging, but it doesn't seem like there is much demand for using that type of gearset in a longitudinal application to make the transmission shorter. The longitudinal transmissions are mostly going in trucks and bigger cars that have the length available.

Again, anybody know how this one works??

I would really like to see an exploded view of it to see how it is put together.

In the late 60s, HONE made an aftermarket overdrive. One model was similar to the later GV unit, and the other unit replaced the front of a Ford 9" pumpkin. It was written up in Hor Rod at that time.
