Did they ever make one to fit a Chevy bell housing and if not, what did Chevy use that equaled it if they did back then??

Mid '60's and back here.

I'm talking about a Chevy 3-speed stick OD that could be installed behind a 409.

I've never seen one...The GM OD 3 speed used in Chevys was the typical 4 bolt side cover 318 and then the Saginaw OD three speed in the late 60's'...There was a heavy duty three speed made by Borg Warner? offered on 396 cars and maybe other GM cars.. but I don't know if it was available with OD...You might be able to swap mainshafts and bolt on OD section?

According to my boss George, the keeper of all things manual transmission info in American autos:

Warner shipped the R11 behind their T85 heavy-duty three-speeds only. OE customers included AMC, Studebaker-Packard, and Ford (cars and light trucks). General Motors was almost a customer, testing a T10-R11 combination for Corvette in the early '70's before discovering that the tooling was exhausted and retooling for the volume expected was prohibitive.

Thanks Paul!

Wouldn't have been a new idea, as Tom Beatty made an adapter kit with a housing and shaft to put the R11 behind the T10. It was featured in a mid-60s Hot Rod Magazine article. For whatever reason, it didn't sell well. I've got one built up with a Chevy T10 / Ford R11 overdrive and a Hurst shifter.

Jack,

You never cease to amaze me.

Ta heck with the B&J 2-speed OD unit, I will take the Chevy three speed stick R-11 OD instead.

He, He!!

Oh, never mind, send me the B&J unit...... The USPS money order is in the mail to you.

But what do you want for the Chevy three speed stick OD tranny???

I tried to order a three speed stick OD for my '67 Camaro, but I was told Chevy quit selling them in like '64 or so??

So it has a Muncie M-20 4 speed in it..

Hi Pdq, would this be for use behind a 409, or your high revving SBC project? I'd think the wide ratios in the trans, and then when engaging overdrive might not get along well with the powerband as I envision it.
Non synchro first may be somewhat of a negative too

Make sure this is what you want, cause it's a very rare custom '60s hot rod artifact - Chevy iron case T10 4-speed, aluminum Beatty adapter, Ford iron case R11 overdrive and a Hurst custom shifter. I've never seen another offered for sale anywhere in the past forty years.

Jack;

Can you check your PM's, George had some questions about it from an engineering perspective.

THX,
Nathan

Jack,

The two pic's are blocked??

Where can I get a Ford P/U, B-W, T-85/R11 OD unit??

Just look in the old P/U boneyards?

I figure a new Lakewood scatter shield with a Chevy block bolt pattern and a Ford Trans pattern will do fine for mounting everything. I should have a scatter-shield regardless.

Borg-Warner T85/T89 overdrive in Fords was very rare even back in the day. The last one I had, I didn't want to sell, but a friend restoring a pickup begged so long and hard, I let him have the complete setup, including driveshaft and cables, for $500.
