3.03 toploader help

Post by The Badger » Mon Apr 30, 2018 11:38 am

Just got 2 3.03 toploader s for a good price and was trying to see if these things can be built to handle anything in the 500ftlb range. Any parts interchange from the four speed? Anyone make a hardend input and output? The toploader s are 28 spline on output..both from v8s one galaxie on 67 mustang...so please tell me I didn't waste my money.

What is the application? At Bonneville, they live behind 500 lbs/ft with no worries. Put one behind a 460" in a 4000# Galaxie with big meats and it doesn't live so long.

I'm trying to figure out if you have a couple three speeds or that oddball overdrive tranny since you asked, if any of the four speed parts are interchangeable.

The Toploader 4 speed is a tough tranny. It will stand up behind your 347 in all but the most severe abuse. My guess, first thing to give up will be the 1-1/16" input shaft.

Its not the od trans, they are the 3 speed toploaders from the 60's. Ran the codes on the riveted plays and came back 3 speeds from v8s.

That being the case, nothing but a few bolts and c/c distance is the same.

So they wouldn't hold up as well as the 4 speed? If so I guess ill sell them or put them in one of the little v8 cars I have sitting around.

They are strong for a three speed but not in the same league as the 4 speed.
