converting from power steering to manual

Post by chevy_power »

I have an 1985 chevy c10 with power steering. the steering box in going bad and needs to be replace here pretty soon. I was wondering if it would be easy to switch to a manual steering gearbox. (parts, cost, ect.) Ever since I've had the truck the power steering pump has leaked and I've always hated it. I've driven our '56 chevy with a manual gearbox and liked how it felt going down the road. Also, would this be a good idea? My parents are absolutly against it and was saying something like "your truck wasn't designed for manual steering and you would mess it up." I also got the same speech when I took off my AC. (but I didn't tell them about it until it was already off  )

Those trucks can have manual steering, and it sucks.

Sure you'll build some arm strength, but power steering just might keep you out of an accident.

Those power units are plentiful and cheap in the boneyards.

Manual steer is possible ( Even on a 1 ton back then) but as KM said but too slow and too stiff.

The real question is what is the specific failure on the steering box?
