Which chevy small block book???

Post by 8843astro »

Hey guys,

Kind of new to the forum. Been researching the last couple of days but wanted to get your input.

I have a chevy 350 short block that was rebuild about 3 years ago and now would like to finish it. For now, just want to gather information to get educated. I'm a newbie....

Which one would you suggest? Maybe both?

How to Rebuild Your Small-Block Chevy by David Vizard

or

How to Rebuild the Small-Block Chevrolet: Step-by-Step Videobook by Larry Atherton

Great forum..

Thanks in advance...

I found a lot of things I disagreed with in Vizard's how-to book.

Being that this is new to me, I went ahead and ordered David's book. I've also read of others not agreeing certain parts.

I have his other book "How to Build Max Performance Chevy Small Blocks on a Budget" but wanted to get another on that would get into the basics.

machine shop tom.. Which other books would you recommend?

Vizard has some decent books. I also don't agree with everything that is printed but at least you get an overall idea what is going on. Reher Morrison also has a couple of books, Upper and Lower Engine Assembly that may interest you.

For starters, HPBooks old, "How to Rebuild SB Chevys" and then their "How to Hotrod SB Chevy's", both old tech to this day and both still good.

Next John Michelsen's book by S-A Design, "Chevy Performance Vol. One: The Small Block Chevrolet Engine".

Then get into Smokey Yunick and Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins if you want to get into way old-school tech and NOTHING taken away from the later Dave Vizard books here at all.

And the late, great John Linginfelter has a book more a-tuned to POWERFUL street engines that is made up of conservative but still his formula for creating POWERFUL easy HP street engines.

PS., the history of our beloved '55 to '85 SB engine is worth the price of the HPBooks "How to Hotrod SB Chevy's" book alone.

Read everything you can, then select the parts that improve the performance in the rpm range you'll be using the engine. Bigger isn't always better so don't get too big on the cam, carb, intake, etc. The Q-jet is a great carb and there are several simple things that need to be looked at to make it perform well. Easy to do without taking the carb apart.

If you make a mistake on selecting a cam, carb, intake always make a mistake on the small side.

Ask a lot of questions. Most of us are here to help whenever we can.
