rocker suspension pin material question

Post by mbrooks »

i need to get a pin made for a rocker arm type suspension and have a material question or looking for recommendations.

it will be 1" dia. little less then 5" long have 5/8" fine thread tapped into each end to a depth of 1" at the least.

the designer of the car recommends 17-4 stainless h900. i took this recommendation to a machine shop and they kind of balked and recommended 1045 since they make a lot of pins out of this for different applications. the stuff really needs to be stainless for the corrosion resistence.

is there a stainless that would be similiar to the 17-4 that would be easier to machine or should i stick with this stuff. the shop said the price of the 1045 would be about $30 each for labor, the 17-4 would be closer to $60 ea. labor.

the bearings that ride on the pins are composite ptfe, the pins are captured in metal brackets.

I would go with the 17-4 stainless at around 100,000 yield.
1045 steel is around 35,000 yield.

mcmaster carr lists two 17-4's. one annealed and the other h900. would one be preferred over the other.

So you can machine it and still have 140,000 yeild, go with the H1150. It cuts pretty good.
