Amazon sellers have to include Kalifornia smog fees on illicit information; some add voluntary budget deficit reduction contributions.

More seriously, I would guess that there is (often) some sort of un-monitored (?) program tracking sales on other sites. A dozen years ago my wife purchased two used copies of my professor's previous book to have him sign them. She noticed that the same book then jumped significantly in cost on other sites.

That's odd. I've bought automotive books that were so hard to find that it was shipped from Germany and it wasn't much more than a regular book.
This must be some screwed up Amazon automated pricing run amok.

Amazon says my baseball cards are a penny when they are 20-50 cents in the books.

I was trying to find Vizards book on 2.0 Fords. On Amazon the price was something ridiculous like $150. I ended up using my old standby Abe Books. It was like $20 shipped. Building HP version 2 is like $23 including the shipping from them.

On short run or out of print some sellers jack up the price cause there might be someone out there that will buy without looking elsewhere.

My F-1 engineering book has gone from $75 last year up to $250, and it might actually be worth it.

I'm very certain that Amazon uses a pricing algorithm. Book prices are always changing. Generally anything out of print or in scarce quantities have much higher prices.

I've also used abebooks to buy some out of print books, even had them shipped from the UK for a fraction of the Amazon price
