low cost data acquistion pressure sensors

Post by bill jones »

-I'm wondering if anybody has good information on reasonably priced pressure sensors that take a 5vdc input and produce a zero to 5vdc output that they'd share.
-I'm specifically looking for zero to 100psi & zero to 200psi sensors to use with an Edelbrock Qwik data box or with the Innovate LM1.

What price range are you looking at?

The Kavlico absolute and gauge pressure sensors come in 50 to 2000 PSI ranges, and usually retail from $100.00 to $175.00. These can be found at www.aempower.com and various retailers. Also check any of the larger EFI mfgs like Motec.

-The Edelbrock pressure sensors cost in the mid $200 range to $300 so I'm looking for something less than that and here's why.
-I needed one tachometer signal sensor from Edelbrock.
-the WD price on that was $47 and I can buy the same exact part for $5.63.
-So I'm thinking that there's a good possibility that these same $250 to $300 sensors might be able to be had for a lot less than what the aftermarket is charging us.
-Then if you look at the Edelbrock fuel flow sensor it's $2667 and looks to be the exact same thing as a Flo-technology with a signal modifier on it.
-Thanks for the reply

Bill, I have a dataq data acquisition set up and wish to record rpm, same signals as you described, what should I use for a sensor, or can you tell me about the $5.63 item you found?

Another option, if the data recorder allows you to calibrate your own sensor table, is to use a 0-500 PSI A/C high side pressure sensor from a late model Chrysler car. Junkyard here we come.

-as of 10-6-06 I have about thirty five zero to 100# pressure sensors (.5 to 4.5vdc output ) left that I found at my favorite freight salvage place.

-And another 75 vacuum sensors like what you'd use for measuring crankcase vacuum with drysumps and/or vacuum pumps.

-Both of these use the same pigtails and I have some of those also.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-I don't know what a person would do with a zero to 700psis sensor but I have 8 of those available also.
-These have a 3 wire extension about 6" long that you could install your own connector.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
-if anybody is interested, e-mail me so I have a place to send the info and I will send you a couple of photos and a description of what these are.

-I can sell any of the sensors for a 20 dollar bill each plus $4 for postage.
-and pigtails for $16

-I have recently acquired a nice supply of zero to 75# pressure sensors that I can sell pretty reasonable.

-Here is the signal out:

PSI--------voltage
0--------- .66volts
10----------.97
15---------1.20
20---------1.77
30---------2.31
40---------2.91
50---------3.48
60---------4.05
70---------4.62
75---------4.88
77---------4.96

-price is $25 for each sensor and that includes the postage within the USA and about $5 more to elsewhere.

-The pressure sensors have a 10x1.0MM male thread that uses an O-ring.

-I can fabricate adapter fittings to get either a male 1/8"NPT or a male 1/4"NPT for $5 each and I have Honeywell pigtails for'm at $16 each.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
-I also have plenty of vacuum sensors----with male 1/8"NPT fitting end---that use the same Honeywell pigtails---$25 includes the postage inside USA.

-The output voltage is:

0 = .54 volts
1" = .81
2" = .96
3" = 1.16
4" = 1.34
5" = 1.58
6" = 1.77
7" = 1.98
8" = 2.21
9" = 2.39
10" = 2.59
11" = 2.76
12" = 2.99
13" = 3.19
14" = 3.39
15" = 3.63
20" = 4.65
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ZERO TO 20# pressure / and zero to 15" vacuum.
-these are similar to a 1bar boost map sensor----except they have a brass threaded case with a 14x1.5MM male O-ring fitting end.
-I can sell these for $25 and include rethreading the fitting end to 1/8"npt male and this $25 will also include the postage to anywhere in the 48 adjacent USA states.
-They use the Honeywell PC15191 pigtails that I keep in stock for $16 ea.
-the only nomenclature is on the plastic stem for the electrical connection----PPE/PA GF30
-the brass case has a 1" hex and there is a light circular machined cut about .080" up from the bottom of that hex which could denote something.
vacuum
15" = .20 volts output
14 = .23
12 = .46
10 = .60
8 = .81
6 = .98
4 = 1.16
2 = 1.35
1 = 1.43
.5 = 1.49
pressure
zero = 1.53 volts output (this is what the sensor reads with engine off--at 4200 elevation---voltage increases with pressure---decreases with vacuum)
3psi = 1.72
4 = 2.11
5 = 2.20
6 = 2.51
7 = 2.71
8 = 2.87
9 = 3.12
10 = 3.26
11 = 3.46
12 = 3.64
13 = 3.87
14 = 4.05
15 = 4.20
16 = 4.45
17 = 4.60
18 = 4.81
19 = 4.91
20 = 4.91
-Tested one sensor to get these numbers----altitude during test is 4200 feet---about 25.75"HG / 12.7psi absolute---so these numbers will change slightly--something like 20% with altitude.

-I also have a few other odd sensors available.

-If you are interested in the other sensors I have a page written up (with some photos) that I can forward to anyone who wants to get me their e-mail address which is available at my profile.

What media are you measuring? Fuel, oil, brake fluid? What pressure ranges?

There are some options, see if the Motorola/Freescale board mount sensors fit the bill, they are both cheap (15 dollars) and good, but don't like some media such as alcohol. All types, gauge, differential, and absolute pressures up to 1000 PSI. You can build a 'black box' 4"x2"x1" with 4 sensors inside. They make some very sensitive differential sensors that come in very handy to find pressure drops in air boxes/filters, for aerodynamic tests etc.

For harsh media there are the MSI, Kavlico, and Honeywell one piece stainless isolated element types, these are typically 75-200 dollars per, in gauge, absolute.

Either of the above are available pre-amplified (5v supply, 0v-5v sensor output) or unamplified with a mV output.

-all I did was check one sensor using air pressure.

-As far as what can be used I have no idea---altho the zero to 100psi sensors that I had found & sold have been used for engine oil, automatic trans fluid, pump & race gas and methanol and never had any problems--don't know of any that were used on brake fluid or nitros.
-----------------------------------------------------------
-This is a different batch of sensors with a brass case----made in mexico

-I have searched these numbers 1846481 & C927213A and PPE/PA GF30 which are on the sensors and haven't been able to find any joy.

-The PPE/PA comes up with some technical chatter that I haven't really studied yet.

Greg has lots of real deal sensors, designed for a race car enviorment. Here's one listing he has on ebay.
